Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.8/100, a mean average of 78.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.5.

The first Swans album to convince me I may actually end up liking some of their stuff (listening in order). Far more interesting, diverse, and dynamic than their previous efforts. It trails off on side four and feels a tad bloated, but its highlights achieve this transcendental... gothic... drone-y... beauty that is so unique to Swans.

Not a big fan of this album. It strikes me as an intermediary piece between Swans' earlier sound and the later stuff. As such I find it hard to connect with .

"White Light From the Mouth of Infinity" feels more of an experiment, trying to test how it feels to be brutally honest. Honest on Nietzsche's level, not caring about your feelings and self-pity, just spitting that light in your face. In a neutral view, the truth may be bearable, but it seems Swans doesn't find that to be enough. They literally made optimistic and hopeful rhythms while singing about how they are "better than you" and how you barely know anything at all.
As mentioned, the Album is not nihilistic but rather caries that Nietzsche in itself. It praises power, that failure is unavoidable for the lesser man [any man actually, anything other than the übermensch] and that we are born as sinners due to that first lie told. This album pumps new feelings and doesn't get boring so easily, however, on the first listens one might think this is just a bad copy of Joy Division. Just give it enough time, and immerse yourself in the pessimism, while you're having that smile on your face.

One of the best post-punk records I've heard.

First Swans album i can just put on and dive into.
It sounds like a harder and noiser type of post-punk music.
Much easier to listen than other albums.

I love this already. Every song is great, especially the middle tracks. Michael Gira can make the darkest, most sinister music, but he can also make some of the most gorgeous and blissful music one could want. Sheer brilliance.

Too much reverb for me to love, but excellent songwriting.
