Miriam Makeba by Miriam Makeba

This was a great listen. Those vocals are piercing straight to the soul, she belts in a meaningful way. Musically it was pretty good, but also pretty standard, otherwise I think I'd rate it near perfect... really dug it. 4/85.

2. Burzum - The Ways of Yore, possibly one of the only black metal artists from that region I actually liked somehow. Don't remember listening to this one in particular, but then again I don't remember.

Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle

I've listened to some strange albums and this is right up there with them as one of the strangest albums I've listened to. At first I was quite into it. Some noisy, challenging songs to start off with but they were good. By the second half of the album though the insanity was starting to become a bit too much for me. It just sounded like someone fucking around really. I quite liked California but this one not so much. 7/10 and 28/34 for 1995.

Considering the time of the year I feel I have to choose this one.

Play With Toys by Basehead

Not exactly what I was expecting, which is good. This has to be one of the earlier crossover albums I've heard; it's really more of an alternative album than a strictly hip hop one, but it still has the feel that a hip hop album should. But not in 1991. I can imagine that most hip hop heads in 1991 would've dismissed this as some really wack stuff. I'll have to go back to see what other albums were released around that year, but this would've certainly been an anomaly. Anyways, the music is laidback "slacker rap" as someone described it. Luscious Jackson is really the only other thing I can compare this to, but their first EP came out a year later.

Purple, certainly a not fun record with Disco Volante. I'm sure that Dusk At Cubist Castle will go over much better.

A Christmas Gift For You by Various Artists
Merry (Happy) Christmas Everyone! 'Twas fitting PurplePash. I'm kind of surprised I haven't heard this one before now for how much I like these artists individually. For me Christmas music is classical and crooners, so hearing country or soul/motown genres do Christmas music usually is a turn off. There were a few on here though that had great energy. Oddly enough I love this stuff outside the Christmas music stuff, so just an odd combination took it down a bit, but still a solid 3.5 (the country would get a 2...).

2. Foehn- Hidden Cinema Soundtrack Chief!

Hidden Cinema Soundtrack by Foehn

Exactly as it says, this is is eerie kind of background music that doesn't really grab the listener, but it was serviceable for it's duration.

Seth, The Louvin Brothers are one of the great foundational country acts.

The Colour And The Shape by Foo Fighters

This might not be groundbreaking, but it's a very well-made and fun 90s alt-rock record with a handful of standout tracks. I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. Good job Dave. 3.5/5.

2. Dub contest sounds fun.

Merry Christmas people!

(1)

The Ways Of Yore by Burzum
I'm pretty sure that's not how they celebrated Xmas in the 15th century, but well. Varg had a good streak of solid albums in the 90s until he went to jail. His albums from here onwards (those that I've heard at least) pretty much suck. There's nothing worse than derivative and mediocre dungeon synth, even if he's basically invented the genre. Unfortunately he was released from prison, but fortunately he has been releasing music that's a bit better from there on. This one is a solid dungeon synth/medieval music, gets a bit boring at times but it's diverse enough to listen to the whole thing in one sitting (an hour and 8-9 minutes). Alternate Skyrim soundtrack maybe, where they went more with the middle ages feel. 7.5/10

No Love Deep Web is possibly their best, and continue with that mashup, it looks good

Fatman Dub Contest by Crucial Bunny & Prince Jammy

Serviceable dub that works for its short 30 minute runtime. First track was probably the most interesting musically.

I don't know what your opinion of Grizzly Bear is, but I think Shields may be better than Veckatimest.

Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control

This did go over much better. I was hooked from the first song...after a start like that I was always going to listen to the whole thing hoping for more of that. Although nothing ended up being as excellent as the opening track, for a while it was a really good psych pop album. Heavily influenced by The Beatles (surely Define A Transparent Dream must have been a "let's make a Dear Prudence type song" - and I thought it was great!), with it's harmonies, melodies, and hooks, it also has some interesting noise, dissonance, and effects going on. The Green Typewriters suite was a lot more experimental, more to do with the title of the album I imagine, with it's atmospheres and ambiences, most of which worked, but not all of it hit for me. After that a few more good quality psych pop songs to finish. A really enjoyable, fun and interesting album. 8/10, and 22/42 for 1996.

Rocka there's actually an album on your list I've already heard! It wasn't exactly my thing but you might appreciate it more. Sd Laika - That's Harakiri
