This sounded... French... hehe. I feel like this music requires you to know French (mostly) because it is vocal driven. The instrumentation is ok. He's a great vocalist, but since I don't know French, it didn't matter as much - Sigur Ros I don't have this issue because the instrumentation is more important (imo) than the lyrics. Same goes for Gypsy Kings or Pizzicato 5 or really any non-English speaking music I do like. So this was a nice passionate French vocal performance, but even if this were in English I think I'd be less interested - not a vocal driven music fan. Ne me quitte pas is the only exception from this gentleman, but that's not on this record. Sorry for the low rating- 70/2.5 - it's not bad it's just I'm not fan of vocal driven music.

I am not a Car Seat Headrest fan. I listened to the original version of this about five years ago, and while I don't remember much about it I remember thinking it felt unnecessarily lo-fi and that the production didn't add anything to the songs. Whatever that means. What's funny is that as he started to clean up his production a bit I started to like his music less, with Teens of Denial being one of the decade's albums that I enjoyed least. So it wasn't really surprising I hadn't bothered to listen to this.
What is surprising is that I...kind of liked it? OK, I'll say I disliked and liked it in equal measures. First, the good. I liked the guitar sound a lot, as well as how big some of these songs sounded. Again, I don't remember the original much, but this definitely sounds better. I also liked the lyrics, for the most part. A lot of the lines I liked I've forgotten now because I listened to this earlier today, but I remember the second song being good lyrically. Something about him just trying to keep moving forward and asking himself what he should do to keep going - eat breakfast, eat lunch, etc. Next, the bad. I just don't like Will Toledo's voice. At all. I'm a big fan of slacker rock and laid back vocals but his vocal style isn't quite that. It's like he's whispering but somehow trying really hard to whisper while still mumbling just enough to make it hard to understand him. As much as I liked the guitar sound, the vocals are not mixed well. While I liked the guitar sound, the songs often seem to not really go anywhere. Some of them have cool structures and almost feel like progressive rocks, but others just kind of meander around without accomplishing much. But the thing that annoyed me the most here were those goddamn spoken word parts. I don't remember what they were all about, but the ones I do remember ("this is a song. what does that mean? who knows?") were incredibly vapid. This thing is already over an hour long, it didn't need to be pushed out even longer with these completely disposable segues. I feel like they would have made sense on the lo-fi version, but not so much here.
So in short I didn't hate this, but it's not going to make me go back and give his other stuff another chance.
Haven't heard any of those, but I'll recommend this one by the "if I had to listen to one I'd choose this" rule.

A Dark Ambient album inspired by one of the most infamous mysteries in Russian history. If you don't know about the Dyatlov Pass incident, then read a snippet on the wiki; it's pretty interesting.
Anyways the album is definitely creepy, but it's also a bit meandering and bland to be a great album. I also could have done without some of the strange vocals that at one point just sound like a guy burping and not some newly awoken demonic hellspawn. However, it does create the atmosphere it sets out to establish, so, for that, it's worth a listen from me at least.
A Trick of the Tail is their first without Peter Gabriel.

This is the first for me and Merle Haggard, even though I've heard the name a bunch of times. And I actually liked it for a genre I usually don't like. I felt like the lyrics were honest or at least the delivery of them were. Some pretty good pickin and a singin. 3.5/80. (I'd probably give it a 3.75/83 actually)

That's pretty interesting. Makes sense. I just though outlaw country was the thing, but there's something to be said about how Johnny delivers and this easily paid tribute to it. Wanted to speak directly to the work, but yeah, I totally got a Johnny Cash vibe while listening (lyrically/vocally). I've always appreciated nearly anything Johnny Cash did and this album definitely is a runner up there.

This is the first thing I have ever heard from Sparklehorse. I had never heard of him until BEA. What a great album! First of I love the sound of his voice, reminds me of Grandaddy a bit and I love his voice too. So much emotion coming through. Then the music is great from the lo-fi acoustic songs to the noisier indie rock. And good variety breaking up the sad and melancholic songs with some upbeat rockier songs. From what I could tell the lyrics were heartfelt and I look forward to discovering more of them in future listens. Overall I found this a sincerely moving album. 8.5/10, 4/36 for 1995, and I am putting it in my '90s chart at 74/100.
Pretty much the above applies to this album too. But with more and sadder mellow songs. I'm now convinced Sparklehorse were a huge inspiration on Grandaddy. Sparklehorse is a great example of why I still love playing this game...I'm not sure if/when I would have gotten around to listening to him otherwise. 8/10, and 12/34 for 1998, but that could probably change upwards with more intensive listens if I get around to it.

Genesis is another band I've never been a fan of. This album didn't convince me, but I didn't dislike it as much as I disliked The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The first song was pleasant for the first minute or so, but then a second guitar came in that felt like it was racing ahead of the other guitar. I was worried the rest of the album would be like that, but it ended up being a lot less proggy and even poppy in places. Good playing, especially the drums, but probably not something I'll come back to. The intro to "Robbery, Assault and Battery" reminds me a lot of the music in Wii Sports. My prog ratings for this game so far go:

Wow! I absolutely LOVE this. Great folk rock that transports you into its own little shire. Certainly not for everyone, but it could become your own special hideyhole from ht e hustle & bustle of the world if you let it.

My two favorite finds were Lucifer's Friend and this. Lucifer's Friend is a proto-metal lost classic that I like even better than Deep Purple's In Rock which is saying something. If it had come out of England instead of Germany this album would not be "lost".

Lay My Bones Beneath The Valley Oak by Ambersmoke
It's a pretty interesting mix of noise, something resembling shoegaze and art rock. A bit ambient at parts and some electronic instrumentals too. Didn't really wow me on first listen, but it seems like a grower. I'll surely give it another go or two. 7/10
