Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by OutKast

So, this is the album that put southern hip-hop on the map. Not that I've listened to any southern hip-hop aside from OutKast, but it's still nice to see where the scene made its first inroad. They had a long way to go from here, though. Big Boi and André have competent flows, but the beats and the lyricism are middling. The lyrics I'll chalk up to their age at the time, but the beats seem largely (and understandably) derivative of the two coast scenes. As an album it's fun enough, and I'll revisit some tracks, but this was two steps behind Aquemini and three steps behind what was coming out of New York around 1994.

Apparently, if you google "10 value spinner", you'll get a wheel you can spin for a random number. This is what the wheel picked. I promise not to make a habit of it, but I had to do it once. 😜

Stephen Stills by Stephen Stills

So my favorite album or so of the 70s is Deja Vu from CSNY. And so I kinda was a sucker for this a bit even though I thought to myself if it were any other artist doing this exact thing I'd say, well there's that hit and the rest is good. BUT what I will say is dude has a knack of making a big sound out of "nothing", and that I admire. I'll give it a 3.5/80.

2. Virgins /--/ Tim Hecker

Also LedZep - that Boris album is great. Glad you liked it too. Great find from this game for me too.

Also Jameth, I hear you. I agree that album is historically significant, and it isn't bad, but neither is it their most quality record (imo). If ya'll haven't seen the Key & Peele skit on OutKast I highly recommend it - it's hysterical. I think that's what made them great. And damn, their flows are so unique and smooth. They make it sound easy.

Forward thinking pop from this NY based band, with lots of influences. Flirts with oriental world music, 80s synthpop and new wave, and a fair share of electronic genres. It rarely goes beyond "interesting" though, that's the main problem. Cool and unique, doesn't totally grab me except for the opening song, Glass Jar (which is also the longest song at 11 minutes), the third song (Adult Goth) and some other moments here and there. Very frustrating, since the production and sound palette are astounding. I would like to listen to it more though, seems to be a grower, but after 2 listens it is 7/10.

Well, this is fascinating and has blown up as a game and thread in the last couple years I haven't been active.

Not sure I'm doing it right, but of those 10 you listed, RoundTheBend, I recommend Coat of Many Colors by Parton - it's short and sweet and just a great album.

Now The list I'll originate that I'd like to delve into is The Top 100 Greatest Music Albums by Badseed. The top 10 albums of which I haven't heard or can say I have next to no real reality or concept of them even if I have ever "listened to them:

7. Tender Prey by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
13. Guitars, Cadillacs, etc, etc by Dwight Yoakam
23. Push The Sky Away by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
33. God Bless Tiny Tim by Tiny Tim
34. Velocity:Design:Comfort by Sweet Trip
52. TNT by Tortoise (This was heard a many years ago and don't remember any real details)
59. Let Love In by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
60. Honky Tonk Heroes by Waylon Jennings
62. MY WOMAN by Angel Olsen
74. No More Shall We Part by (you guessed it) Nick Cave and the Badseeds

Anyway, still and again not sure i'm playing the game rightsies

This was a great album. Hell, I could make an argument as to why this record could be an excellent one. It's one of those odd records that is quite weird but also quite welcoming. The only track I would say would be my least favorite is oddly enough the opener. The way that track has these odd edits kinda takes me out of the vibe and was a bit of a turn off in a sound way. But the rest of the album was great. Love the psychedelic haze that this album has. Also love the weird detours this record can go by the premise from song to song. Tracks that come to mind are Jell-O, White Freckles, Sexual Athletics and Nude Beach a Go-Go.

So what is holding me back from giving this album a higher grade? To me, I wished this was more lush so I as a listener can just get lost within the sound. Like I would say most of the album does fit that notion, but I would never say it hits that sweet spot that an album like the recent Tame Impala album. The only other thing that I could argue as a bit of a crutch would be it's "lo fi" filter. Kinda wished that wasn't there but it never knee caps the album.

Do feel this album can be a grower on repeat listens. And an album that I would recommend. Want to see where his other albums would go if they get more odd or get more enveloping. But I will get to it whenever that happens. Grade wise it is an 85 and would be decimal wise an 8.7

1.

Aaliyah by Aaliyah

Unfortunately, I don't find this to be as special of an album as many seem to. It's quite a nice modern r&b album. Aaliyah's vocals are great, and most of the production is really good. The main drawback here is songwriting. While there are standout tracks, many of the others just seem half-baked, in terms of both lyrics and melodies. Even so, I really enjoyed this overall. R.I.P. 3.5/5.

2. Luigii, I love this album:

4eva Is A Mighty Long Time by Big K.R.I.T.

And LedZep, if you need a pick, the Ghostpoet album looks intriguing.

Amplified Heart by Everything But The Girl

I didn't really get into them at the time. I've now listened to two of their albums and I still don't really get into them. Their is no doubt Tracey Thorne has a great voice, but strangely it was the songs Ben Watt sang that I preferred on this album. It's pleasant enough background music that if I concentrated on too much I started to find a bit dull, which probably says more about me than the album itself. 6.5/10 and 60/63 for 1994.

Rid Of Me is an old favourite of mine, Baystate.
