Under The Flightpath by Darren Price

Yo, this was a solid album right here. consistently engaging and dynamic. That's all I'm asking for. Good techno is just like porn, I know it when I see it. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (Or hear it, I guess.) ๐Ÿ˜

The self-titled Gorillaz album is still probably my favorite of theirs.

Gorillaz by Gorillaz

(This one is locked so I had to stick with the small artwork. Correction pending.)

My lukewarm take is that Gorillaz have never made a great album, just several good ones. This one has been on my list to check out for years. It's a mellow, pleasant listen with some cool guest spots, good production by Dan The Automator, and a competent performance by Damon Albarn. Other than a handful of standout tracks (including Clint Eastwood of course), it mostly glides by. 3.5/5.

The Supreme Negative by Portion Reform

So, this duo has Regis in it, and I have a love/hate relationship with his music. That one album I listened to in this game entitled Gymnastics was shit. It was the same 5 second loop stretched out to 5 minutes each track. But, I also like Sandwell District which he is apart of. This album falls somewhere in between these two albums, although I don't like most it. It's not quite as boring as the one I ldon't like, but it's also not as exciting as the one that's good.

Listen to Sea Change.

Lady In Satin by Billie Holiday

I love her distinctive, "I've lived a life" voice, and obviously her full of emotion singing is rather special. However the string based, very easy listening jazz background music is really not my scene, so after a while of similar sounding song after similar sounding song this became a bit of a slog to get through. Every now and again the lyrics added to the song (Glad To Be Unhappy for example). So because of her voice I still give this a 7/10, but i can't go higher than that...and I am now glad I've heard a full Billie Holiday album rather than just a song here and there.

Hmmm....what is this weird-ass list?...umm let's try Igor Wakhevitch- Docteur Faust

Docteur Faust by Igor Wakhรฉvitch

Wow, this thing is as baffling as it's cover and description make it seem. That makes me happy. Mixing elements of Modern Classical, Krautrock, and Prog Rock and throwing that all into an experimental stew, you get quite the 30 minute psychedelic trip. I'm not sure if it's just good or great yet, but it's certainly one of the more intriguing things I've heard in awhile.

Sea Change by Beck

Another album that has been on my to-do list for years. It pretty much finds its mood, pace, and instrumental/vocal style and then stays there. I guess that may be the point as a lyric-driven breakup album, but I would have liked more variety. Definitely a slow burn. The lyrics didn't blow me away on first listen, but I think there's more to pick up here when I re-visit it. High-quality music and quite a nice listen, even if it didn't measure up to my high expectations. 3.5/5.

Moths by Moths

This was a one-off project by some schoolmates who went their separate ways shortly thereafter and lost contact for decades. They werenโ€™t great musicians or songwriters, by any means. Thereโ€™s only two originals on the album, with the second one aptly titled โ€œA Stupid Songโ€. There are loads of covers here, with four of them by Bert Jansch (Presumably their sage, whom the lead singer does a pretty decent impression of). Lots of flute and hand drums, ร  la the Incredible String Band (or another, more ambitious disciple of ISB - Comus). They do generate a very pleasant pastoral sound that made for a very comfortable listen, but the limited palette hurts the album. Between that, the lack of originals, and the fact that they donโ€™t really elevate the material beyond the source, I doubt Iโ€™ll revisit this more than rarely.

I was expecting something a little more exotic, but I guess thatโ€™s the way it goes.

Wilburn Burchette Opens The Seven Gates Of Trascendental Consciousness by Wilburn Burchette

At first I was thinking, OK this is fine, just some light noodly guitar work nothing special. But then it was suddenly over, and I realized I had zoned out for about 20 minutes. So, I think Wilburn might have actually opened a couple gates of conciousness, but maybe not all 7. An appropriately hypnotic album.

Quite an interesting list their Jameth; I think I'll go with Cinque Souvenir.

Yank Crime by Drive Like Jehu
Well now I see what directly influenced At The Drive-In. It's experimental, noisy, sometimes math-rock, sometimes hardcore and mostly fantastic. The only song I wasn't a fan of was Luau, it was too long and repetitive at times. Frantic vocals and politic, nonconformist lyrics match the overall mood perfectly. The songs aren't really "bangers" per se, but they have a lot of repetitive and sometimes very catchy phrases. Not an easy listening by any means, but I found it to be pretty accessible, all the while trying new things and staying fresh. I'm hooked from the first listen. A true milestone in post-hardcore. 8.5/10
