Devotion by Beach House
Don't think I could care less about Beach House if I tried. Unfortunately their music to me feels like a bland cake. Sure you can feel sugar, some fruit, it's not completely flavourless, but the end product's a manufactured, plastic instant cake. OK, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. I do play a song or two here and there, when I'm in the right mindset (that's not often). But for the most part the sterile production and "fake" sugary songwriting doesn't allow me to fully immerse myself in their music. Maybe the better comparison would be some stale crackers, you take them when you've got nothing better to eat just for the sake of it, the first few are good because salt, and then after the third you're done for the month. All of this is not supposed to be a dig at Beach House and their fans, I'm just describing what I feel while listening to them. It's a pretty unique feeling, combine that with the very high acclaim that they receive and me in fact enjoying a few songs here and there, and you'll know why I spend so much time thinking about Beach House and the reasons why I don't dig them. Devotion was marginally the worst of the 3 albums I've heard, but that's not saying a lot. The opener (as it often is) was fine, chamber pop influences were new. It didn't even finish, I was already fed up with Beach House heh. Turtle Island was another nice song, Holy Dances had a very good intro. To continue the food analogy, Devotion is a bland sandwich, Teen Dream is bland pasta, while Bloom is bland caviar. Fair to say that I've enjoyed Bay's chart a lot thus far and this is just a personal lowlight. 6/10

Black Country, New Road -For the First Time
I walked into this album rather cautiously, as it wouldn't be the first time a so very hyped up album would let me down. However, this pleasantly defied my expectations. The main virtue of this is that it is surprisingly and refreshingly original for a 2021 album, it's only their debut and they already seem to have developed their own style and are determined to leave their mark. On the other hand, one complaint would be that it felt too rushed, even after repeated listenings I didn't have time to fully immerse myself into the process, the build-up, its explosive moments were somewhat premature and as a result weren't as satisfactory as they could have been, it left me with the impression that a slower approach would have done it way more justice - I mean, it's not like a super long album, they could easily afford slightly extending its running time. Once you start getting into what's going on, it moves on to something else. The vocals were disappointingly far from my stuff both during the sober moments and the over the top outbursts as well, I desperately tried to ignore them but unfortunately they were distracting throughout the whole album. Science Fair would be my choice for the highlight of the album - although the opening track isn't that far behind and Opus is simply tons of fun.

Kokkinos you were correct, this is mostly up my alley. While also being very good. Moody, dark, but also fun post-metal/blackgaze from Germany. It's slightly lofi but not overly so, which is the key to making good blackgaze. You don't want it to sound too polished, nor do you want it to sound like your local death metal band's demo. At times it did lack some punch, on the first song (Minusmensch) it seemed like the climax should've been some mindless blastbeating or something, and it was just a mid-tempo fadeout. And overall it felt sliiiightly derivative, there's better albums I've heard in the style, even if this one's pretty good too. No other major complaints though, the vocals (both clean and harsh) were awesome and under it's 40 minutes with no fillers. A slim 8/10

Steven Wilson's latest is pretty bad to my ears. Couldn't imagine a musician and composer as good as him releasing something so meh after releasing To The Bone (which was also meh, but was also a transitional album with several bops). But give it a try, maybe it's just me being bitter.

Man I felt I would love this way more than I do. Now, I'm not say I wasn't impressed. I was. I would say this was quite excellent. I was just expecting this being way higher on my list. The qualities I do love from this was when tracks like the title track would be vast and somewhat ambitious. While having details that while you might not notice immediately, does make the experience interesting once you notice it. But a few of the more rustic songs while good, don't interest me as much. Or that multi layer vocal at the opener of the album just doesn't work or if it does, doesn't gel well as it could have. And Indian Red is probably the only track that I didn't care for. But still had a great amount of highlights. Grade:90

Led, you're listening to Amon Tobin. Still need to listen to that album. Also, I'm probably one of the few people that adores the hell out of The Future Bites. Especially that ending where the synths open up and gets vast while retaining a lush high.

I feel no dislike toward this album, but no really fondness either. Not really feeling it. Generally don't like UK hip hop, at least I can't think of any UK hip hop album iu've really liked. This is no exception. I like some of the production and simz is talented and all, but yeah it didn't do much for me.

Well I finally had to bite the bullet and download [censored] to hear this, as there's only a single legal physical copy of it and no legal digital version. Great, compact album with jazzy production and some serious bars from Mach-Hommy. The first track is iffy, but the rest is heat (although I wouldn't pay $3000 for it). It may be conscious hip-hop, but it's still hard as bricks. I've enjoyed his features, but this is my first time listening to one of his projects. I expect I'll seek out more in the future. 4/5.

"The Single Factor" that made Camel make this album was to kowtow to the corporate overloads of 80s studio rock. With only one original member remaining member, this isn't even the same band that made the 70s prog rock wizardry of "Moonmadness". When this album isn't doing a bad impression of the superior Hall & Oates. It gets caught up in overproduced instrumental prog rock, which could be the background music for a bumper used for the Winter Olympics (circa 1982) or a vaguely new age soundscape. It's the stuff of nightmares, but for some reason I still kind of like it, which says more about me as a person than I'd care to admit.
I think you'll enjoy "Center of Attention" Baystate.

Really fun jazz and IDM. St. Germain and Amon Tobin are the first to bring jazz sounds to IDM, drum n' bass, breakbeat and other electronic genres, thus being some of the earliest and most important Nu Jazz artists. Imagine Venetian Snares or Aphex Twin in their crazier phases, add loads of jazz and you get something like this. This was really enjoyable all the way through, even if it's not the most natural jazz + electronic combination I've heard. But I guess IDM and especially breakbeat aren't meant to sound natural, quite the opposite. 8/10
