From the first screamed "1,2,3,4" and the opening riffs I knew immediately I was going to enjoy this album. A fun little (10 songs, 31 mins) garage rock album heavily inspired by old time rock 'n' roll with a punkiness to it. Sure it's not doing anything revolutionary, but there is variety within (at different timies I hear a bit of The Cramps, a bit of Jerry Lee Lewis, a bit of Ramones, and others) , and they are all good songs. The highlight was Pepper Spray Boogie, which really did boogie with it's toe-tapping keyboard action. 7.5/10, and 28/58 for 2000.

So I actually listen to two albums for this list. So this will be a double feature. Let's start with the actual pick.

First Fela Kuti album, and this was an excellent intro to his work. And there is a lot to say about this. Mainly how these 12 minute tracks keep up being quite interesting throughout there run time. Have interesting flourishes and vibes that had me quite impressed. I think what holds me from having this higher graded would be I don't think every flourish worked for me. Either in a vocal or musical sense. Now the other thing that while I do think could have played a role with me would be while I do understand there is political underpinnings, this is one of those points where the language barrier prevents it for fully enjoying it. Now I understand there is another Fela Kuti album coming up later but there is a Gil Scott Heron album coming up as well. So grade wise:90

Now, while this might not be my favorite Steely Dan album, that honor goes to The Royal Scam. This is a high contender for second place. I think what holds this album from being a 100, would be how the last two tracks aren't as impressive compared the first five tracks. But even then this is quite immaculate. Very rich in sound and Donald Fagen story telling is great as always. A high contender for 1977. Grade:95 but could theoretically be a 100.

I really enjoy This Nation's Saving Grace, so it's really just the dodgy lyrics that made me put off this one for so long. Yes, opening track The Classical is a top offender as Chief mentioned, but that's not actually the only instance. We also get an f-slur and another anti-Black slur on Who Makes The Nazis?, an edgy song with a very questionable lyrical intent. Other than those two songs, it's basically smooth sailing. Smith's allusion-dense, sometimes inscrutable, and often surreal lyrics form a great counterpoint to the jittery post-punk rhythms and guitar stabs. And the instrumentals are, after all, at the heart of what makes The Fall truly shine. Based on the aforementioned lyrical missteps, I'd place this a step behind This Nation's Saving Grace, but in spite of them, Hex Enduction Hour is quite a good record. 3.5/5.

Celeste - Not Your Muse
Before getting on to the album itself, I think it would be appropriate to clear up that I may have a slight prejudice againist it, but I' ll do my best to restrain it and keep an open mind - and ear. First of all, it's been one of the most hyped up albums of the year, it seemed to me there was no occassion where it was being brought up without someone drawing a parallel between her and Adele. Apart from the heavy promotion, a second factor that has stopped me from checking it out so far and might affect my perception of it is that at the moment I'm listening to tons of music from the past, so any album with a retro aesthetic is bound to leave a meh impression, I need something more "modern" for a refreshing change. Anyway, I guess it was about time to find out what the fuss is all about. As far as 2021 albums are concerned, the obvious comparison would be Arlo Parks. Celeste's vocals are more spectacular, though she tries her best to hide it, very rarely does she overdo it, annoyingly rubbing in your face see how good of a singer she is. On the other hand, she doesnโt have the same charm, neither is she as captivating or entertaining. Her sound is also pop-based, but instead of r & b, it lies somewhere between jazz and soul. In general, the striking problem with this is that it has more variety than it can handle, it feels more like a compilation than an actual album - but without the songs to back it up. This makes some sense, considering it's her debut and she is still in search of an artistic identity, she throws everything at the wall and sees what sticks. The lyrics are kinda decent, nothing extraordinary or challenging, but nothing horrible or cringeworthy either. It's higly unlikely that I'll revisit it, but still better than I initially thought.

This is the fourth Ka album I've heard, and I have pretty much the same opinion about each one. The production and lyricism are almost always dope. Ka is a gifted wordsmith who spits hard as nails bars about gritty subject matter over beautifully atmospheric, soul sample-heavy beats. The drawback is that the lack of variety makes it feel longer and less interesting than it should. He more or less has one flow, one voice, one tempo, sole guest emcee Roc Marciano doesn't provide a stylistic counterpoint, and the production doesn't take any daring left turns. The track highlights are those in which he perfects his consistent formula, but none truly stand head and shoulders above the rest. Like Honor Killed The Samurai, Orpheus Vs. The Sirens, and Descendants Of Cain, Grief Pedigree is a very good album that I enjoy and deeply respect, but cannot fully connect with. 3.5/5.

What a cool and heavy psych rock album. The vocals were consistently great and surprisingly varied! The riffs and in particular the way they were recorded were so muddy and slushy and thick and heavy - amazing guitars sounds here especially on the riffing. Leads were pretty solid and the jams were mostly not overly long and kept me engaged. Yeah this was really really solid.

I thought their 2018 album was pretty good, at least enough to stay in my library and lead to me hearing this today. It turns out Autumn Eternal is much more my speed. The downside is my typical musical gripe about black metal: screamed vocals. However, they're low enough in the mix here that they don't detract much. The upsides are more plentiful. This does a really good job of actualizing its title and evoking a fall mood. The guitars and drums are both interesting and technically great. The integration of Appalachian folk elements into a metal album is cool. And most important, Autumn Eternal is beautifully atmospheric. Sometimes it feels like you could just drift away on the waves of noise. I would prefer if this were short enough to leave me wanting more, but it's quite a good record as it is. 3.5/5.

Weird, I swear I posted a response here days ago, but likely passed out instead. Anyway, I feel like the "homey" recordings I've heard before that made you feel in the bar with them were much better. I feel like this is for the uber fan who wants to hear even more, but the other edit was better for my tastes. Having said all this it is a fantastic release and if I were more a Bill Evans uber fan I'd likely be more onboard for this one.

I don't know why I haven't heard this album before. I'm a bit of a fan of The white Stripes but somehow I don't think I've even heard any of these songs before. I really enjoyed it. Some primal blues rock that sounds more simplistic than it probably is. Every song was entertaining and quality with Truth Doesn't Make a Noise and Little Bird being the stand outs. Looking back I think it was a good sign of the better things to come from The White Stripes. 8/10, and 24/59 for 2000.
I love Horses. Deserves all it's acclaim. And I don't know any of the other albums so even though it's a relisten for you I'm going with what I know.

I'm glad I got a re-listen of this. Definitely better than I remember and can see why it didn't float to the top like I wish it would for how influential it is. Her voice is gold though and since I'm a bigger REM fan, these tracks are just gold for me... wishing her music itself, even though I can hear Stipe copying her, resonated with me more. Perhaps more listens. Still upgraded the score I gave it last time.
