I remember liking Orient, Occident / Diamorphoses a bit more. Lots of "scary movie music" I'll call it here. Intriguing soundscapes for sure, but I'm reminded of Goodall's claim of The Beatles bridging a gap between the great composers of the past since the great composers of the present were making music that broke the constructs of music set for thousands of years. While this is incredibly inspired, I wouldn't chose to listen to it again other than to experience something "odd", which humanity needs from time to time.

Veedon Fleece is a beautiful, mellow album, and one that measures up well to Morrison's earlier efforts such as Astral Weeks and Moondance. The stumbling block for me is that I've never been a huge fan of Van Morrison. I'm trying to pinpoint why that is. His instrumentation is often gorgeous, and his folk/jazz/blues/soul/rock genre melange is an appealing one. I think the reason is that I don't like his vocals very much. I just don't find his voice or his vocal phrasing aesthetically pleasing, and that's an issue as the vocals often play a central role in his music. Veedon Fleece flows very well, and instrumentally I love when there are strings and winds involved. So the long centerpiece that contains the titular phrase is my favorite thing here. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the piano parts - the less the better. Overall, I really appreciate and enjoy this, but unfortunately there are significant obstacles to it becoming a favorite. 3.5/5.

I love this. Gosh I love this so much. Its so good. So pure. So rich. I love it. I got a little misty eyed listening to this. Which is weird. But I was mid way through "Clouded" or "Subtle Body" when this awesome Slayer-sounding solo came in, Slayer but weird and avant garde. And then a little later the drummer started a new attack upon my sense of time and yep I started get teary-eyed. Because man this is amazing. How did metal guys make this? Its insane.
The whole album is so relentless, it never stops and never rests to be "normal" or to conform to prevailing Death/Thrash/Metal conventions. It could. The band could blow our minds with the stuff that is completelyt out of the box and then present a few stripped back OSDM bits to appease us. But no! They just keep finding ways to unsettle my sense of time and melody and form. Its miraculous.
I loved the new Ad Nauseam this year and I loved that for similar reasons that I love this. To think that this album came out 23 years ago and yet sounds like it could go toe-to-toe in terms of uniqueness and mind-bendingness with the most recent cutting edge Acant Death Metal album is astounding. The solos here are so all over the place. The drummer is a god. Like what the actual fuck is he doing? How does he breathe such new life into the art of breakbeats and do so over and over and over? The vocals are amazing! Intense and also unrelenting. Of the 3 albums so far nominated for me to this listen to in this new metal list/phase I started a couple days ago, this is my favorite.
I had this thought which I've never had for metal before but have had for Prog and rock. I was fantasizing what would be the reaction if you got the 20-25 year old (at the time) members of Slayer circa 1986 after recording Reign In Blood, The young members of Possessed after they recorded Seven Churches in 1985, and the young members of Death in like 1987 when they recorded Scream Bloody Gore/Leprosy in a room and sat them down to hear where the extreme thrash/death metal genre would go in 10 years by having them listen to Obscura. What would be their reaction? Would they dig it or would they basically be completely disgusted and confused? Anyway, just wanted to externalize that thought that has been swirling in my head the last hour or so.
Anyway, yeah this will require (and be getting) many more listens to attempts to at least 30% unpack. But on first true close listen this is a masterpeice and a classic and I think an Epochal sea-change sort of album within avant garde metal and the effects are being felt still 23 years later. Brilliance personified. Not sure why i am going back to including grades when I hate them so much, but if I were to give this a grade, its a 5/5 or 10/10 or 100 here on BEA or an A+. Stunning.
Oh and my fucking wireless headphones started beeping sayiong "feed me electricity nooooow" midway through this album when I just charged them like 24 hours ago and I think either there is a slow degradation of the battery life of these headphones or this album is just soo much that the headphones even were having their capabilities tested and were having the shit beaten out of them by this onslught of genius. My head says the former, my heart and soul says the latter. "Sweet Silence" is the perfect closing horror show closer to this album.

Most acclaimed Metal albums (of any kind) albums since 2000 1996 per RYM I haven't heard or feel I never gave proper Time and Attention to (will cut out albums over 80 minutes in most cases. I expanded slightly the year range from last 21 to last 25 because there are a couple right before 2000 that I really need to get my shit together and listen to or newly hear. Also 25 years is a nicer number than 21.
1. Jane Doe by Converge (considering how hugely influential it is on a lot of my favorites this year, time to revisit and give it some TLC.)
2. Blackwater Park by Opeth (Lost touch with them after Orchid lol)
3. Crimson by Edge of Sanity (its only 40 minutes and its one long 40 minute track which is either cool as shit or super pretentious or both ... we shall see. Also yeah I had the band name and album switched apologies corrected blah blah. Anyway, I just am drawn to some super proggy melodic death at the moment
4. White Pony by Deftones (was on constantly as a kid/teen, yet since say 20 can't say I've given it the new spin it deserves)
5. At the Heart of Winter by Immortal (lets see if this classic of classic black metal album hits different now with my new self.)
6. Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk by Emperor (Time to relisten to this now that I kinda like Black Metal...tried awhile back and thought it was ok i guess.

Wow this thread has become rapid fire. I'm gone for like 4 hours and Merc has already tackled the best album ever recorded and also a Gorguts masterpiece. And honestly if I had to pick 1 issue with Ashes... it's the drums. Not the performance, both Chris Greene and Haughm are very good drummers. Not flashy or very technically gifted, but both of them hit the sweet note imo. The issue is rather the lack of punch, double bass is especially weak sounding and slightly too low in the mix which does not fare well on a post metal/black metal release. Apart from that, it's recently overtaken Mantle as my favourite Agalloch album because, frankly, half of the tracklist are my all time favourites. As for Obscura, I'm a big fan (obviously) but not a 10/10 fan like Chief, Gowi and you. It's a masterpiece tho, no doubt about it and glad you love it. Now patiently awaiting for Emperor review, it's another all timer and for my money the best black metal album to have come out of the 90s Norwegian scene. Nice! Yeah all due respect to Agalloch and their drummers, but we agree the way the drums sound is a weakness. Maybe itโs just not my first choice of style of metal and fierceness of metal, but yeah Boris and Especially Gorguts have beaten the shit out of me in a good way way more than ashes against the grain did. Still, quite liked it.
Iโm finishing my on a whim randomly pushed play on Apple Music suggested Sunn O))) album Monoliths and while I donโt live it, the final track โAliceโ is great enough and the album good enough for this album worshipping nut to finish and then Iโll push play on first Emperor revisit since my metal Enlightenment. _________________ -Ryan
