Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 7% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.3/100, a mean average of 74.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.5.

This is the first metal album I've ever listened to, so there's absolutely no frame of reference, but I really like what I'm hearing. I've always had a thing for dissonance, so obviously "Obscura" is right up my street, but I also appreciate the technical proficiency on display here as well as the transporting lyricism. It's a behemoth for sure.

Easily one of the most technically dissonant records ever released. And that's why it's so fucken good!

The playing on this album is just off the charts. There are some incredibly complex arrangements on here, and it's insanely heavy to boot. A favourite of mine from the death metal genre.

I remember describing my first experience with Obscura as "tearing apart my brain and putting it back together", it's a special record.

Twisted, lurching, convoluted stuff. The riffs are completely ugly and strange, in a memorable, kind of half-catchy way. Its worth the challenge.

Usually death metal doesn't appeal to me. This album, however just tweaked my attention. I heard about it's musical complexities and gave it a listen. I was not disappointed. Yeah if you're not accustomed to listening to this type of stuff, it's a tough runner, but if you give it the chance it's truly beautiful.
