wowowow! I am glad I listened to this. After it ended I listened again and then a 3rd times all in a row. That doesn't happen often. I only listened to Obscura once and afterward I moved on. I felt worn out by it, in a good way, but still I took my headphones off with a sigh. But with Anthems I was a bit obsessed right away. I don't think I ever heard this. I think I only had heard their previous classic. and was lukewarm at the time on that. Maybe I shoulda heard this first. This is so goddamn great.
When it comes to black metal, there are myriad ways to approach it. I like all of them. But this album manages to be brutal and intense but never super lo-fi. I manages to be Synmphonic and gorgeous and atmospheric but it never loses its clear Metal harshness. Even when I'm listening to gorgeous, icy symphonic sounds that are the right amount of clearly not actual symphony sounds, I am still just soaking in the heavy badass black metal atmosphere. Anyway, yeah its great. With some classic black metal albums (I know this is more modern and "Symphonic Black Metal) I feel detached or not super invested in the music, maybe because the sound is a little too lo fi or the drums are a little too unimpressive or strangely recorded, or or etc. There is usually something that keeps me from buying in to a black metal album because some part of the whole package is missing. This is, to my inexperienced MB ears, is almost a perfect representation of a black metal album. This is right there with Bergtatt as my fave BM album. I recently relistened to Burzum's Filosofem and I think the sound of that album is the best ever that I've heard but the fact that a huge amount of the album is ambient takes it down a peg. So top of my head this Anthems To The Welkin at Dusk is top tier Black metal with only Bergtatt as company. Bear in mind most of the albums in this genre I have heard were from years ago before I kinda found my taste for it.
Anyway I am aimlessly rambling. This is great. It gets a 4.5-5/5 and yet another album being added in my next 90s chart update.

Most acclaimed Metal albums (of any kind) albums since 2000 1996 per RYM I haven't heard or feel I never gave proper Time and Attention to (will cut out albums over 80 minutes in most cases. I expanded slightly the year range from last 21 to last 25 because there are a couple right before 2000 that I really need to get my shit together and listen to or newly hear. Also 25 years is a nicer number than 21.
1. Jane Doe by Converge (considering how hugely influential it is on a lot of my favorites this year, time to revisit and give it some TLC.)
2. Blackwater Park by Opeth (Lost touch with them after Orchid lol)
3. Crimson by Edge of Sanity (its only 40 minutes and its one long 40 minute track which is either cool as shit or super pretentious or both ... we shall see. Also yeah I had the band name and album switched apologies corrected blah blah. Anyway, I just am drawn to some super proggy melodic death at the moment
4. White Pony by Deftones (was on constantly as a kid/teen, yet since say 20 can't say I've given it the new spin it deserves)
5. At the Heart of Winter by Immortal (lets see if this classic of classic black metal album hits different now with my new self.)
6. Paracletus by Deathspell Omega (by far the most recent of the albums on offer here. looks like a modern classic or near classic black metal album.)
7. Crack the Skye by Mastodon (for the love of fucking god don't make me confront this album again! 😉 )
8. Close to a World Below by Immolation (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)
9. Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower (really like to near-love their early stuff, never heard this latter-career peak album)
10. None So Vile by Cryptopsy (listened once and remember being mildly disgusted. But those were earlier and simpler times and maybe i'll like this brand of brutal death metal now) _________________ -Ryan
So originally I was gonna comment about this album yesterday. But had to do a few things and I usually have to go to bed early for work. Otherwise for the most part, this is phenomenal. Like there are a few tracks that I was a bit meh at like Jungle and the last two tracks of this album. But the rest of this album is just so good. Very lush. The orchestra hits work really well. I have to mentioned that the big hit Mr. Blue Sky was part of an arc was a surprise for me. As well as this being well in the album. Not an opener but the ending of side 3 of the album. I think my absolute favorite from this had to be Starlite. Those synths and the way the track flows is just wonderful. This was a personal favorite and I should go through ELO's discog at some point. And not just in this year game. Grade:95 but close to a 100.

In other news I'm glad Merc liked the Emperor album. I remember thinking it was good for metal (keep in mind I'm not really a metal fan at all and it gets worse as I age and lose all my testosterone... 🤥🤐🤣 ).

This is a very nice live album, even though I'm not the world's biggest fan of electric blues. The bits where he really lets loose and just jams instrumentally can be sublime and are the best parts. The more structured parts with vocals are solid too, and King is working from a good setlist, albeit one with no significant stylistic curveballs. I don't like some of the stage banter, but some of it is very fun, and it gets poignant when the nature of the concert venue moves to the forefront. Those points naturally remind me of Johnny Cash's prison albums. B.B. King is a guitar legend for very good reason, and much of that is present on Live In Cook County Jail. It's quite a good album, and one that touches greatness in its more freeform sections without grasping it firmly. 3.5/5.

I like Tori Amos and could listen to Silent All These Years on repeat for days before I'd tire of it. I think I'm tired... cuz this sounded like a great album, but nothing really sunk its teeth in me... like I went through and it was like, oh ok, that's kinda surface interesting, I wonder where this will go. *imagining Applerill dancing to Raspberry Swirl for sure*... but yeah idk... like it felt like one of those deeper more mature things I typically like (instead of the "hit" of the younger artist most people go for). Anyway, I also find it interesting she looks like a different person in almost all her pictures. Her story is an intriguing one. Anyway, I wish I liked this as much as the previous three, but didn't somehow.

When I saw that this guy was involved in both Art Zoyd and Univers Zero as a cello player, I got pretty excited. So this is a droney kind of cello album with some light electronics that is punctuated by very strange chant-like treated vocals. The vocals are bizarre and can sometimes compliment the music or overpower it. They're very goofy deep-pitched monster sounding noises.
