The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks
If all of you were shocked that I've never heard a Depeche Mode album, get this: I've heard only 1 (one) Kinks song in my entire life. And that's You Really Got Me. I may have heard Lola or Waterloo Sunset, but don't remember the first thing about either of them. And that was the whole point of picking RYM overall to be honest. A lot of albums I've somehow missed and a lot that are just a hazy memory. Enough rambling, here's the review. I liked this. In fact, I liked this more than expected, cause 60s pop rock was my favourite when I was a teenager but now I'm not as interested. Doesn't apply here though, the quality is really good throughout and it's obvious why this is considered a classic. The first three songs are considered one of the most iconic one-two-three openings of the decade, but honestly I didn't think they were much better than the rest. Personally, the best were the more baroque pop cuts, but it's all pretty solid. The biggest complaint is the lack of variety, which is to be expected with 60s pop so it's not really a huge issue. 7.5/10

๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฒ wow!!! I am shocked about both. Depeche Mode has some great albums, incuding a couple that used to be all time favourites of mine...and Lola is a classic that was everywhere when I was young.
So I've somehow managed to go 8(ish?) years on the BEA's forums without posting in the Games subforum... Today I rectify that.
(1) As it's my first post here, I don't have any review to contribute, so I'll start off with the recommendation:
(2) LedZep, you've given me an easy list to work with, they're all great albums and you can't go wrong (and btw I'm glad you liked Village Green, that's a wonderful album and easily the Kinks at their best).
Please listen to Innervisions by Stevie Wonder. It's a little more digestible than Songs in the Key of Life but a little heavier both in lyrics and instrumentals, and it's usually a crapshoot between those 2 albums (and maybe Talking Book?) for Stevie's best. I believe Innervisions contains his magnum opus, and I'll let you decide if that's the case (and which song I may be referring to).
(3) Let's go with the RYM all-time list. I'm not a member of RYM, donno why, I think I found them around the same time I discovered BEA and I think I just like the community here a little better. IMO we have a better overall list.
I've filtered out archival albums from the RYM all-time list, but I've kept live albums in. So... this ends up being mostly live albums, and it looks like they end up being fairly high-rated despite fewer reviews than studio albums. So be it, I think we've all been missing live music over the past year ๐คฃ
- Swans Are Dead by Swans
- Live After Death by Iron Maiden
- Soundtrack From Twin Peaks by Angelo Badalamenti
- Live at The Old Quarter, Houston, Texas by Townes Van Zandt
- Live Rust by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
- Unleashed in the East: Live in Japan by Judas Priest
- Roseland NYC Live by Portishead
- Dark Magus by Miles Davis
- ATLiens by OutKast
- Sun Bear Concerts Piano Solo: Recorded in Japan by Keith Jarrett
Thanks!
EDIT: also, point of order: after listening to one of the albums, do people usually continue posting with the same list until all 10 are listened to, or do they move on to a new set of 10? Just curious. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Whatever works for you, I replace the one that got picked and keep the remaining nine until I decide to change the subject, when it's obviously 10 new one - from what I 've seen that's the trend that more or less everyone follows.
Also, welcome, have fun!
Welcome to this game and to the games forum in general my friend! :)
Haha, thank you! Glad to be here

There won't be an essay length comment on this one for a couple reasons: 1. I didn't love it nearly as much as Dead as Dreams and 2. becuase I am just a little less creative-minded and in the groove right now.
Still, this was a really cool album. It comes in from the first seconds with a hard charging heavy fury that is refreshing. It is the album equivalent of that beastly defensive end in football, like a Reggie White type, who comes out at you like a freight train right when the ball is snapped and before you have time to blink, boom! he has bum rushed your Quarterback and beaten the shit out of him and taken the ball and started running with it. Okay, that was a sports analogy and not sure how well that will land with other people who read this. But yeah that was the image that was in my head as I listened a second time to the Groove/Death/Prog monolith for the second time.
There is a furious groove to these riffs, I think it would have been maybe my favorite band had this album been released in 2002 or so and I had bought it. That sounds like a sleight, but its not, I just really liked albums that had this sort of thick, nasty riffage and growled and badass lead singer and few classic metal solos and a certain complexity that was easy to digest (not super wanky) and also had moments of gorgeous slowed down beauty that give the heavy parts more oomph when they return to beat the shit out your ears again. Like, in 2002 probably my favorite metal albums were The Great Southern Trendkill and Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera, and this seems like a more refined version of that with more prog bits and perhaps less swag.
Anyway, the whole albums seems to be a concept album about the earth or the world heading toward (or maybe just arriving) at climate disaster. The vocalist delivers the varied vocal styles with enough passion to make this concept land and not be corny or preachy. And the music is good. The production is quite modern and big and I mostly like it. That Dimebag-esque chunky riffage is usually good, but I think on average I prefered the guitar and production sounds when they deviated a bit from that chugga chugga riffage. Idk. It was all solid.
In all I am happy I finally heard this. Its one of those modern albums that is quite revered and I see why. It slots in the middle of these first 10 metal albums I've listened to for this project. And even though no one asked for it, I will update how I feel about these 10 1996-2021 metal of all kinds albums in relation/rank with each other.
#1. Dead As Dreams (perfect - 5/5)
#2. Obscura (perfect or close to perfect need to listen a few more times 4.75/5)
Tie #2. Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (same as above, maybe I actually like this one slightly more than obscura but I don't think its a good idea to piss off Gorguts so I won't put it 3. 4.75/5)
#4. Jane Doe (seminal and amazing. 4.5/5)
#5. Boris at Last Feedbacker (super cool, a tier lower than those first 4. this is a 4/5)
#6. Ashes Against the Grain - very cool and my fave Agalloch so far and as of now. 3.5/5)
#7. White Pony (uniquely beautiful and awesome. 3.5)
#8. From Mars to Sirius (excellent and heavy and the right amount of prog mixed in. 3.5/5)
#9. Blackwater Park (coming around on it a little more still kind of on the lower end of these albums so far in my opinion. 3.25/5)
#10. Crimson (cool, but didn't quite stick to my ribs so to speak. 3/5)

@EyeKanFly! (wooohooo! I get the maiden nomination) I give you a classic very stripped down live album by one of the Greatest songwriters who ever lived on this world (its kinda long but man is it full of some badass songs and a lot of fun banter betwixt TVZ and the crowd):
1. Still Life by Opeth/1999/#6 metal album since '96 (Yes Opeth's Time out has ended --yay! I have grown a little on Blackwater Park and this is same era and just a little earlier in their discog. Note: there are another 2 after this one waiting on the list excluded only due to one album rule lol. the love for this band is wild.)
2. The Sound of Perseverance by Death/1998/#9 metal album since '96 (Have always put off listening to this because I haven't yet had my moment with Symbolic. If this gets picked I will probably, knowing me, listen to it and Symbolic and maybe finely have that "holy shit, I get it moment)
3. None So Vile by Cryptopsy/1996/#11 metal album since '96 (listened once and remember being mildly disgusted. But those were earlier and simpler times and maybe i'll like this brand of brutal death metal now)
4. Panopticon by Isis/2004/#17 metal album since '96 (Atmospheric sludge and post-metal designation tend to scare me off due to not yet finding an album I really liked in or loved in that mix. Remember listening to this and being a bit bored. Will try again.)
5. Close to a World Below by Immolation/2000/#18 metal album since '96 (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)
6. Crack the Skye by Mastodon/2009/#19 metal album since '96 (for the love of fucking god don't make me confront this album again! ๐ )
7. Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower/2005/#20 metal album since '96 (really like to near-love their early stuff, never heard this latter-career peak album)
8. At the Heart of Winter by Immortal/1999/#24 metal album since '96 (lets see if this classic of classic black metal album hits different now with my new self.)
9. Times of Grace by Neurosis/1999/#25 metal album since '96 (atmospheric and straight up sludge --- maybe earlier than silver in blood neurosis will be more to my liking.)
10. Verisรคkeet by Moonsorrow/2005/#31 metal album since '96 (Pagan Black Metal, Bleck Metal, Folk Metal - these are the genres attached. Never heard it, but based off my recent love and adoration of that Weakling album and that Emperor album, I am always up for a new taste and style and side of Black Metal.)
i find it funny my obsessive need to add comments and factoids to my lists until they look like that ^ lol _________________ -Ryan
Alive 2007, recorded in Paris, starts off with two solid but unimpressive songs. I thought this was going to be one of those acclaimed albums that doesn't live up to the hype. But then the duo go on a tear, and there are only two inessential songs the rest of the way. Starting with Television Rules The Nation / Crescendolls, the record is a stream of groovy, interestingly re-imagined Daft Punk bangers. The songs blend together fluidly and inventively, and the setlist is great. This is a strong contender with Discovery for their best. It's technically a bonus track, but the encore is also quite worthwhile. R.I.P. to a great band. 4/5.
D: Toeachizown - Dam-Funk

Kind of a Jazz-fusion/library music thing. It was OK. Fine for the background.
Baystate, "Plowing Into The Field of Love" is my favorite of those, and the new Iceage album comes out tonight, so give that a spin.
