Very good contemporary post-punk. I like the energy and the drumming a lot, and the songs are all solid. But there aren't a lot of standout tracks, and I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals. Overall, I've had a hard time differentiating much of the acclaimed post-punk of the last decade. I regularly enjoy it, but bands like Fontaines D.C., Iceage, and Protomartyr just blur together in my mind. That's not a knock on any of their listenability though. 3.5/5.

Yep, as I expected, I was not horrified nor disgusted this time while listening. A nice sign of either my deteriating mental state or of my general increase in love and tolerance of metal.
Outisde of Pig Destroyer's Prowler In The Yard or other grindcore stuff, I can't think of anything quite as absurdly punishing as this album that I have heard. That is awesome. The (apparently legendary in death metal circles) lead singer here, Lord Worm, is an acquired taste. For me the taste was acquired so rapidly I felt like maybe I was fooling myself. Earlier this evening I was ready to write that musically this is a 9-10, vocally its a 4. But Now just a few hours later I'd say the vocals along the whole spectrum of styles presented here is actually one (of many) strong points of the band. The other obvious strong point is that the drummer is actually not human and his gravity blasts or, if ot that, extremely fast blast beats are amazing and quite frankly awe-inspiring. The riffing is so sick. SOOOO sick indeed. The solo on "Dead and Dripping" is factually beautiful. The weird and random bass noodling just before the breakdown and then the breakdown itself on "Slit Your Guts" is maybe the best part of this album, but its close and its amazing is all i'm saying. The drumming everywhere is good, but on the song "Benedictine Convulsions" its truly ascendant, if that's the word. The solo on that same song is also short and sweet and cool - just like this album. The haunting piano that starts "Phobophile" is unexpected, and then the eerie bass before it explodes adds to the excellence.
This is BY FAR the shortest album I've been assigned on this list/game so far (just talking since starting the metal list bits.) and at just 32 minutes and 8 unrelentingly, brashly, impossibly BRUTAL tracks I never feel like I'm worn out and tired of the album nor do I feel it shoulda been longer. It is just right.
Did I like this album? absolutely. But will this be an album and style I return to often? That is less sure. Not sure if i am being honest. This is just so absurdly heavy and fast that It's something I recommend everyone experience at least once. And who knows maybe this will be like my experience with other stuff similarly aggressive where it becomes one of my favorite albums ever and the genre becomes what I love as much as anything. Time will tell I suppose.
For now its right at almost a 4 star album. and let me do a 13 album ranking on this list just because I like it. I'll make it small so it takes up less space.

Note: there are another 2 after this one waiting on the list excluded only due to one album rule lol. the love for this band is wild.)
2. Panopticon by Isis/2004/#17 metal album since '96 (Atmospheric sludge and post-metal designation tend to scare me off due to not yet finding an album I really liked in or loved in that mix. Remember listening to this and being a bit bored. Will try again.)
3. Close to a World Below by Immolation/2000/#18 metal album since '96 (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)

Johnny Cash is one of the few artists I love from growing up listening to my parents play him (they mostly had not good taste in music) so I'm happy to listen to this. His vocals are great as always and he has the power to bring out the lyrics in every song he sings. I get the impression that he just loves to sing and I think that comes across here. I See A Darkness and Mercy Seat were the highlights, and I'm glad he included a few of his own songs towards the end. 7.5/10, and 32/65 for 2000.
Pink is great. It's in my decade chart, and top five for the year.

I'm a fan of his self titled, but never listened to anything else bar Either/Or like once. Now twice. Both are excellent, but for some reason I really need to be in the zone to enjoy Elliott Smith. And not only because his music's so dreary and dark (for example, I can listen to Oldham or Van Zandt whenever). I still haven't figured out why. Either/Or (and his music in general) have all of the right ingredients, the good songwriting and atmosphere, cool lyrics, so I'm hoping that one day it'll all click, but for now I'll just enjoy what I'm hearing in small doses. I'd put this one slightly behind the s/t, mostly based on the number of listens and the fact that Southern Belle is an incredible song. 8.5/10

There was a part of me that was going to listen to both of Iggy's record back since I was given a solid answer. But it was also due to how Lust For Life is a dope record. I think this was a bit of a collaborative effort since this was during the time Bowie and Iggy went to Berlin. I mention that this has a similar vibe of Bowie's two albums from 1977. As well as Brian Eno's album. Having these killer rock tunes that not only slap but also suck you in. Has this somewhat droney quality where those guitar tones make me grin in pure enjoyment. Like the only thing that would probably prevent a glowing reception from me is some of the performances on Turn Blue. And even then that track as well as the rest of the album just hits. Will be looking forward to his other album. And this is way better than his 1993 album. Grade:95

Once I Was An Eagle is the fifth Laura Marling album I've heard, and my opinion of it is very similar to my opinions on the other four. She makes gorgeous music that brings to mind some of the great folk musicians of the past (such as Nick Drake), and complements it with beautiful vocals. However, none of it has clicked with me on a level deeper than enjoyment, and few of the songs stand out or stick with me after the record is done washing over me. This may be fully a me problem, or just that I haven't given any individual album enough listens. Once I Was An Eagle is by some distance the longest project she's ever made, it's a concept album that I don't yet understand, and it's somewhat frontloaded. But despite these factors, it stacks up favorably to her other work after one listen. Maybe that's a sign that this will be the Laura Marling album that finally fully clicks for me with further listening. 3.5/5.
