Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 5% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 76.0/100, a mean average of 75.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.5.

This album represents the stepping stone from her original style ("Alas I Cannot Swim" through "A Creature I Don't Know") into her current sound.
Once i was an eagle flows gracefully but this comes at the cost of track uniqueness.

So simple and so goddamn lovely. Still love this years later.
A beautifully ambitious album. Once I was an eagle, is a lovely song cycle by a Laura Marling who is clearly full of confidence. There's no point in picking out individual tracks as it's basically a medley. There's obviously a huge Joni Mitchell influence in there but there's also the sounds of the acoustic Led Zeppelin from the early seventies. The first half of this album is breathtakingly brilliant, but around the mid way point I feel the record starts to run out of steam. Still, it's a very good LP and Marling's ambition and artistic courage has to be applauded.
One of my absolute favorite albums. Too long? I say it's the perfect length! I remember the melody of each song.

A transcendently great breakup album--or at least, a deep exploration of relationship dysfunction--from Laura Marling. This album has it all: powerful vocal performances, sharp songwriting, sophisticated guitar playing, and hard-hitting percussion. The multi-song suite that opens the album is fascinating, with the relentlessly percussive "Master Hunter" as a highlight.
Just fantastic. What a voice and such quality songs & delivery. Nicely produced. MEZ

One of the year's best. Clocking at more than an hour yet not a single note out of place.
Would've been perfect if it stopped after "Devil's Resting Place"- the first half hour is absolutely seamless and mesmerizing. The second half is noticebaly less consistient and doesn't quite have the focus or singular pull of the first and muddles up the whole picture a bit. There are enough good songs here, however, to make this a very, very good album, if not perhaps a surprise masterpiece it had the potential to be.
This is a spectacular album! Laura Marling's voice gives me chills. It's a very impressively written album.
