Easter Everywhere by 13th Floor Elevators

No sophomore slump for 13th Floor Elevators on Easter Everywhere. Sure, there's nothing on the level of You're Gonna Miss Me, but Slip Inside This House is a classic opener in its own right. No other track quite rises to that level, but there are several other great songs. Tommy Hall's jug playing is always fun, careening along charmingly in the background. I Had To Tell You adds some welcome guest vocals from his then-wife Clementine. Lyrics on Easter Everywhere range from really cool to goofy, which is par for the course for 60s psychedelia. There are more solid originals than there are gems, and the band doesn't really do justice to the Dylan cover. Overall, while this is a very enjoyable record and worthwhile listen, it's just a hair shy of greatness on first listen. 3.5/5.

Those Once Loyal by Bolt Thrower

Nothing revolutionary, nor is that what it’s trying to be. This sounds like an album where every riff lyric and everything is exact and pretty much perfect. It distills death metal down to its essential elements and does it amazingly well. It’s never abstract or wildly complex. And it’s never super ultra heavy or brutal. But each and every song here has a sick sound and groove and they all find that pocket and stay there and the result is a wildly consistent and badass album.

The album also sounds amazing. Really cleanly recorded and every detail shines. I’m no expert on recording techniques, just wanted to say this sounds incredible and dynamic.

The vocals are excellent old school death metal in the best way. The solos and riffs are all killer. And the whole presentation is cool. The subgenre noted for this on RYM is groove metal. I can hear that. There are some parts of these songs where the groove is too good. It just makes you (or me) feel like a badass and, even though the motion contradicts my internal feeling of badassness, my head can’t help but bob.

Anyway, yeah this was great. It was refreshing hearing this. Obscura and None So Vile and even The Sound of Perseverence (all DM albums recently heard for this game) were albums of extremes. Either overwhelmingly fast and avant garde and experimental, or overwhelmingly brutally heavy and fast or incredibly complex and progressive. This album, however, takes old school death metal and just perfects it and it sounds fucking cool as hell.

Edit: particular shout out should be given to the entirety of the title track here. What a fucking powerful riff with an incredible low end bass line rolling underneath the guitar onslaught. Also “Killchain” and
“Granite Wall” and “Anti-Tank” are incredible. The album is consistent as hell but that middle of the album run is mind blowing.

RYM metal of any kind since 1995 (expanded by 1 year and now voila! we have dissection, Blind Guardian and Suffocation!) top albums not heard or vague on. 1 album per artist and here we go. (no Death or Morbid Angel or Neurosis due to another thing i'm doing on my diary.)

1. Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection/1995/RYM #31 metal album of all time (classic melodic black metal album I can't remember hearing.)
2. Ghost reveries by Opeth/2005/RYM #34 metal album of all time (I went ahead and listened to STILL LIFE on a whim yesterday and so its off this list. It was pretty good. Not really my thing. Yet, because it's OPETH, I still have this album ready in the wings. And after this album, another one, then a little later on we will have 2 more Opeth albums. My god. I mostly jest. They are a quality band and I respect them.)
3. Close to a World Below by Immolation/2000/RYM #41 metal album of all time (okay, now that a spot has freed up, this brand new listen of this classic DM album is now a possible Nom)
4. Imaginations From the Other Side by Blind Guardian/1995/RYM #80 metal album of all time (first power metal choice woohoo. i guess. I mean something about power metal just seems so corny, but maybe I will hear it differently after listening to this classic.)
5. Pierced From Within by Suffocation/1995/RYM #94 metal album of all time (another BRUTAL death metal album woohoo for real! I liked that None So Vile listen so maybe I'll dig this too.)
6. Diabolical Conquest by Incantation/1998/RYM #117 metal album of all time (some cool death metal/with a sub-genre of Death Doom metal. Interesting indeed. Oh and apparently LedZep loves these chaps' music. Wouldn't mind one bit this being chosen.)
7. Black Future by Vektor/2009/RYM #119 metal album of all time (kind of a new record, very tricky! Starting to work my way into albums released later then 2005 with now 3 distinctly different 2009 or 2010 albums. This is a badass thrash album which I heard or heard most of once during lunch and remember liking it before playing something else and never returning.)
8. You Fail Me by Converge/2004/RYM #129 metal album of all time (another converge. they are great and have had a big influence on stuff i like. Unlike Jane Doe, this is a classic Converge Math/Metal core album i've never listened to.)
9. Bath AND Leaving Your Body Map by Maudlin of the Well/2001/RYM #160 and #130 metal album of all time respectively (I've been looking forward to these coming onto this list. Both albums released same day. Will listen to both if one is nominated. I heard Bath recently and I was perplexed and massively intrigued by this very VERY unique mix of genres and the general, and subtle avant-garde aspects. I listened to Bath while playing Fallout: New Vegas and it was a great soundtrack for the wasteland.)
10. The Chemical Wedding by Bruce Dickinson/1998/RYM #132 metal album of all time (never heard it, never really even thought of playing it. Not a fan of Iron Maiden really. But have an open mind.)

Ictus by Andrea Centazzo

The genre tags says free improvisation, but it's probably closer to some soundtrack or library music. Some fun sounds on here that ripe for some sampling. It's also very percussive-forward, so that's a bit different.

Mercury, I just listened to "Black Future" last night, and it's still killer. Although probably too long. I think Vektor is the logical evolution of the Sci-Fi thrash metal that Voivod started in the 80s.

Black Future by Vektor

Listened and this is really really good technical thrash with some variety. The riffs are consistently inventive and the drumming is cool as is the bassist. The songs and the transitions, on first listen, didn't generally blow me away or stick with me and none stood out. Still quite cool. And I see what you mean, Chief, when you pointed out the thematic and stylistic through line between Voivod pre-Nothing face and Vektor. The Cryptosis album from this year is in a similar vein and I think quite incredible, so its good to see some new young guns taking up the sci fi tech thrash/thrash metal mantle or whatever the saying is.

The vocals even have a similar tendency to shriek at the ends of lines and crack as early Voivod. But while we are here talking about the vocals, I'm not a huge fan. I like that they are somewhat a mix of old school almost hardcore punk influenced thrash vocals found in Voivod and Exodus mixed with more modern Black metal-ish vocals, i think that is a cool idea. BUT not a fan generally of the vocals here. I still generally liked the album, despite it being 20 minutes too long. Vocals are a low point and the guitar riffs (as is correct for any self-respecting thrash record) is the highlight.

I listened to a bit of Terminal Vortex by this band from a few years after the release of Black Future. And the vocals from the little I heard there are toned down in the right ways and the riffs sounded a bit more mature and detailed. Maybe Terminal Vortex will be that album that makes me fall for this band. This album didn't quite do that, although again, it was quite solid and quite incredibly tight musically.

Summer Sun by Yo La Tengo

A thoroughly mellow indie album from Yo La Tengo that matches its title. There are a few great songs that stand out, but mostly this is simply a pleasant, atmospheric backdrop for other activities. There's not much variety, and they don't get heavy, leaning on a lot of hushed vocals and aggressively tasteful instrumentals. That said, the band does a great job, and this is a fully-actualized and excellent-sounding soft summer album that would fit well in a variety of listening contexts. It also continues a trend: I always really enjoy Yo La Tengo albums, but after eight, I've only had a true breakthrough with their most acclaimed record. 3.5/5.

Wide Awake! by Parquet Courts

Title track totally brought me in. But even in the beginning I was getting something like a cross between minute men and early arctic monkeys. If it weren't for the title track though and some other gems I might just keep with the minute men. Pretty solid and glad I was won over from that prejudice.

After giving this a revisit, my opinion on this hasn't really changed. A pretty excellent album that knows when to be grand and fun but doesn't hit me as much compared to the follow up that was released in 1993. That sequel is where I sorta feel the original has this double edge sword where it is somewhat tame becomes a hindrance or a benefit depending on the listeners preference. Though I will say as of now, this has the best quality when it comes to the 50's nostalgia. Grade:90

Through Silver In Blood by Neurosis

Great 1-of-1 album. Stole that saying from Bill Simmons. 1-of-1 is used by him to describe a basketball player who is not only the very best of whatever style of player he is, but also unique, with really no one else ever quite like him. Examples would be Charles Barkley or Dirk Nowitzki. Players who have so thoroughly established themselves as themselves with their own style which hasn’t been exactly replicated. Through Silver in Blood (of the albums I’ve heard enough times to have a clear enough concept of) is a 1-of-1 album - something that is distinct and unique and a triumph of substance and style and almost everything that goes into its creation. What may be other 1-of-1 albums in my opinion? Idk. Maybe Spiderland, or White Light White Heat or ... hmm... not sure. Whatever I am getting off track.

This album is heavy as hell. It is filled with the sounds of chains and grinding gears and sirens... at least it feels like those are the sounds that fill up this mammoth album. The guitar riffs are so so sooo heavy and massive that sometimes I don’t even notice how primal and simple most of them are. The way the band builds all these disturbing and varied sounds around the massive riffs is what makes everything seem almost all-consuming. Impressive sound design.

The drums mostly are also somewhat “simple” - they sound like almost tribal ritualistic drumming. The shorter transition tracks create these eerie connective tissues between the massive epics that dominate the album. The way each song builds is strikingly dramatic in a sort of miserable and hopeless and brutal sort of way. Godspeed does this pretty well as well. The vocals are excellent because they are so un-metal - they are rabid, anguished cries of utter pain and desperation delivered in a post-hardcore sort of way. The vocals actually are less “post-hardcorey” here than on their earlier Souls at Zero album but they maintain that grit and power and relatability that sets them apart from almost every other metal or sludge album.

The album is really so cohesive and so of-one-piece that I find it hard to find a track that I’d ever dream of playing in isolation from the rest of the album. It’s a complete package album that builds and maintains a hopeless and dire world, fraught with pain and loss. And it manages to tear this world of woe down in its finale with such breathtakingly heavy extremeness, it was actually a little overwhelming. Incredibly impressive.

Do I personally LOVE this album as much as some of the other recent albums I’ve gushed over on this thread? No, not exactly. But, I mean, that’s a matter of taste obviously. I do think this is one of most well executed, downright immersive, apocalyptic, and heavy albums ever. And it stands alone as it’s own and quite unique and genius through and through.
