Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Extremely underrated
Best Tracks: Seasons Of The Shark, Take Care
Easily Yo La Tengo's most underrated album, the band continues the trend of stripping back their music to the barebones on Summer Sun. Completely lacking of the band's noiserock roots, many YLT fans found this record to be unappealing. Despite this departure, repeated listens will reward YLT fans with an absolute treasure of challenging and beautiful material. Contained on this record is the band's best ballad ever, "Today is the Day", James' best song with YLT, "Tiny Birds", and the absolutely otherworldly experience that is "Let's Be Still". While not recommended as a starting point for newbie YLT fans, Summer Sun earns a strong ranking amongst YLT's already stellar catalogue.
