... and the hype is real. This is some seriously WILD and genius level avant garde Prog. It’s distinctly it’s own thing, a hard thing to be in 2021. But I hear some Henry Cow and King Crimson and some of the more weird Mike Patton projects in this album. It’s mesmerizing what these people created.
There must be something in the water at The Windmill - because Cavalcade, Black Country New Road and Squid’s debuts, and even that Shame album all
Hit special. The fact they all came up in the same area or club at least is mind boggling.
Currently listening to the last track, it's easily my AOTY. Love it when a highly anticipated album is just as good as expected. In fact, I prefer Cavalcade to their debut by a mile, and their debut was something like top 30 of 2019. For the rec. was eyeing that album earlier. Will check it out. I heard this one yesterday and I was very very impressed and even delighted by the sound/style of this band. It’s Peogressive Death Metal, but there’s something insouciant or playful about it or a willingness to ones do whatever regardless of genre limitations.
Eastern classical / spiritual jazz (?) record featuring Tenderlonious on flute/saxophone and Latarnik on the Rhodes. Bumped it straight to second on my year chart. Their debut EP is/was one of my favorites, as is their previous collaboration with Tenderlonious, so I had to stay up late tonight to give this a spin, and it is breathtaking. Highly recommend this for people who are open to Eastern music. And if you're a grunger, this one is for you too... for all the lovers and the grungers in the audience.

Afrique Victime by Mdou Moctar
This came out today, getting solid reviews. Just listened and it's every bit as good as they say. Need a few more spins but this is looking like top 10 material for the year, definitely my favorite desert blues and West African album of the year so far. Admittedly only listened to a few from the genre and region but Afrique Victime is great.

Another knockout from Lafourcade. Not going to say it's better than Vol 1, but there's some lovely cuts here. About what you'd expect at this point. Not sold she needed two versions of La Llorona though (her third or fourth overall). For a 57 minute record, one should have maybe been a bonus. No complaints about the rest, and the Recuerdame cover is a bit of fun. Plus we got a rap verse on a Ruben Blades track. Whowouldathunk. Her collective discography is a Mexican staple at this point, particularly the past five records. It's been a long time coming, but she's where she should finally be at.
EDIT: Just realized Alfonsina y el mar didn't make the cut 😐 Well, that's a mistake. No idea why she didn't include that. It's better than nearly everything on here. Would have made a fantastic outro. Genuine shame.
I'm not sure what to compare this too, but it's a whole bunch of little pop blasts that somehow really come together to make a pleasant record. Somewhat 80s indie/pop vibe. Was about halfway through before I realized I was enjoying it more than I thought I would. Pleasant surprise.
And I'm taking Pitchfork with a grain of salt this year, their reviews have been... not great imo... but I was really happy to see the praise for Mach-Hommy. Guy deserves it. _________________ Doubles & Conch

Yeah I listened to this again and it's brilliant. Easy top 5 for the year, maybe higher.
And the 2021 queue now consists of:

- Nafs at Peace
- Natalia Lafourcade
- Indio da Cuica
Finished giving it another listen. I think combined Vol 1 and Vol 2 would make an absolutely phenomenal release, but I'm docking off a few more points for the amount of repeated songs on this one. Compared some of her Musas versions to these, and I'm not sold the Un Canto versions are actually better. Different, lusher, maybe equally good, but I still wish she went for some new tracks rather than just new arrangements. And I never judge an album for what's not on it, but my god Alfonsina y el mar should be here 🤣
Gave the Jaubi record a spin. It'll land my year chart. Solid work all around. Not sure they should have J Dilla in the tags... or... hip-hop... but for an improvised arabic-jazz session, solid stuff. Going to give their previous EP a listen later. EDIT: Okay, the EP has a great Dilla cover, that's why.

Saw the release but didn't read your comments or look up track list/etc. until now.
1) Alfonsina y el mar should definitely be on there, no idea why it isn't. I bet it gets included in some regional releases or "deluxe" versions.
2) I wasn't impressed by the Musas volumes, thought last year's Un Canto was incredible and if this is more of the same I'm very excited. I loved Hasta la Raiz and felt like Musas was a step back, while Un Canto is a step in a different direction.
3) "Recuerdame" was actually sang by Natalia Lafourcade in the credits to Coco, so it's hard to say this is a cover version when she was (one of) the original artist(s). But it's definitely a re-imagining which is cool.
4) Ruben Blades guest appearance? Yoooo definitely sign me up
5) I'm just glad she even bothered to release a followup! I wasn't sure how covid was going to affect the recording of a second volume
Anyway I've sufficiently hyped myself up to be let down 🤣 we'll see how it goes _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
