Pirates by Rickie Lee Jones

My first time hearing anything by Rickie Lee Jones, and I'm impressed. Given how much I love the jazzier side of Joni Mitchell, I guess it's not surprising that trying another jazz-oriented singer/songwriter would work out well. But in terms of lyrics and vocal phrasing, the first point of reference who comes to mind is actually Bruce Springsteen - there are a bunch of moments that strongly remind me of him. While I can't say any of the tracks blew me away on first listen, Pirates is a very good album. It's also one that I feel will reveal more on repeat listens, lyrically in particular. 3.5/5.

Dangerous by Michael Jackson

I have never really enjoyed his music, even when I was into the pop music hits of the time at the time. Over the years that has never really changed. A few individual songs here and there. I appreciated the new jack swing style of the first half but rather than than enjoying that, the individual songs themselves weren't that interesting. The second half had some of the better songs (after the what sounded like a Disney song but worse song), with some great MJ vocals (I start to hear some passion in some of them, which felt a bit absent in the first half), but it was a long album and felt like it.

Indigo Girls is the only one I have heard and it has some good songs on it.

Volcanic Rock by Buffalo
A good proto-stoner and hard rock album. It's really fun, full of great melodies, riffs, bass lines. Vocals are fantastic as well. Shylock was probably my favourite, but the whole album was an easy listen which I liked. Not in the mood for anything out-there rn. I would say that it's an underrated 70s gem, despite not being in the same tier as my favourite 70s hard rock albums. The cover is in equal parts hilarious and good. Really like it for some reason, it's amateurish and lofi and has a certain charm. High 7.5/10

Ok I really wanna give you Human, but have a feeling you'll dig Sailing The Seas Of Cheese much more. So Primus it is.

That's the cover mind you. Although the music fits the cover well, you'll probably like it.

Sailing The Seas Of Cheese by Primus

Yeah I'm sure you are right Zep that I would like this album more than Death, although I am curious to hear them as I never have. But Sailing The Seas Of Cheese was the one I was hoping to hear most from these choices. And I wasn't disappointed. Really liked this. Of course the bass of Les Claypool is what makes this so good, but the guitar work is also fantastic, and the vocals are great too. The three songs I know well from the compilation I played a lot are definitely the highlights, but most of the rest of the album that I hadn't heard before were great songs too. Particularly enjoyed Here Come The Bastards as the proper opener after the opening little bassline riff intro. The enjoyability level tailed off a bit towards the end of the album after one of my favourite Primus songs Tommy The Cat, but by that stage that didn't matter much. A high 8/10, and 24/51 for 1991.

I haven't heard any of these so I will go for the one I would want to hear - George Clinton Computer Games.

Solitude by Lord Snow

I have been away awhile. Not sure why this album, after a couple listens , didn't really move me. The sound is shambolic and punk rock while mixing some seriously technical playing especially in the drums and some very very creative genre/sound/stylistic mixing - some parts were just brutal emoviolence - a lot were - and some parts sounded almost like some gnarly abstract avant garde death metal stuff. The vocals were not great and I guess this is the main thing that didn't work for me. This style of screamo/emo vocals - sort of a constant barrage of screaming with a distinct almost crying/wailing dissonance - is just mostly miss and less often a hit for me and the vocalist here doesn't do it for me.

The album is intense and creative and admirable. Its 19 minutes of unadulterated and brutally intense and violent screamo wilness. For those perhaps a bit more into the style, this shit may blow you away. Not my fave.

-------------------------

@purplepash, Okay, this album is amazing and on my 1990s chart. You may not love it. But, then again, if any band or album is to introduce you to the glories of technical death metal or if any such project is to maybe make you a fan, this album is it. Super revolutionary album within metal (as far as I know and have heard in my cursory research of the history) as well.

Human by Death (Metal)

3.

CHANGE! I am going to change it again and focus on some extreme stuff I have been meaning to hear.

Top ranked Grindcore, Deathgrind, and maybe some other stuff that I have already heard but just haven't given enough time and attention to. or have never heard.

1. Dogma by Asterisk*/2003 (extremely noisy grindcore, mixed with some avant garde stuff and lots of noise bits which is cool. Alos, a compilatiopn it seems including an LP and other stuff released as EPs I think?)

2. Sadness Will Prevail by Today Is The Day/2002 (2+ hour experimental and abrasive album with a life crushing mix of noise, sludge, crusty punk, grindcore, avant garde metal etc... I have a feeling this could be an all time favorite once I really confront it and listen closely and dissect.)

3. Human 2.0 by Nasum/2000 (I love me some Nasum. Never heard this LP though. They were one of the great grindcore bands of all time when it came to a sad end in 2003)

4. World Extermination by Insect Warfare/2007 (Very intense and cool grindcore/deathgrind stuff... something of a modern classic of the genre that I have yet to really give a close listen to or enough time to. I am interested in diving in again. Also, silly, but I like how the title of the album is similar to one of the best albums ever also within the same genre - World Downfall by Terrorizer.)

5. Mental Hygiene by Internal Rot/2014 (Excellent grindcore album that I listened to a couple times and never gave or really formulated my thoughts on.)

6. Death by Manipulation by Napalm Death/1991 (This 1991 compilation includes some EPs that ND released after their first 2 Grindcore albums and before their next LP which was quite different. This is some classic classic, bedrock death metal and grindcore and deathgrind. Kind of wanted to listen to the EP Mentally Murdered but saw that it and others are included on this 44 minute compilation.

7. Tanz, Grosny, Tanz... by Yacรธpsรฆ/2007 (German Powerviolence and Grindcore with a a cool album cover and probably something I'll need to add to database but we shall see... it looks fucking awesome.

8. Need to Control by Brutal Truth/1994 (Their 1992 debut is a brilliant deathgrind bar setter. This album also gets a lot of love and I am very very intrigued to hear where they go from their classic debut.)

9. Sweatin' to the Oldies by SPAZZ/1997 (this is a compilation of some crazy grindy powerviolence insanity from SPAZZ. It's 64 songs in 55 minutes! Jiminy cricket!)

10. Lobotomise by Incinerated/2017 (Kind of a new record! verrrryyyy tricky! Anyway this looks intense. A mix a death metal and grindcore and deathgrind and stuff with brutal cover art. Could be cool)

Indigo Girls by Indigo Girls

My parents are fans of Indigo Girls, so I'm sure I heard this as a kid. Folky 'adult alternative' that sounds very of its time, but quality for sure. In terms of songwriting, it's definitely frontloaded (Closer To Fine > rest of first half > second half), but nothing is bad. Michael Stipe even pops up for a guest spot. Their breakout album is quite nice and gets a light 3.5/5 from me.
