I know. It's cool to hate the Eagles. The Dude said so, and The Dude abides. Except that it's not, really, cool to hate the Eagles. They were once a great early country rock band with glorious harmonies that was slowly taken apart and turned into something they weren't by a certain founding member who was the 4th best guitarist they ever had, and the 4th best singer as well.
So, I have an Eagles fantasy where Bernie Leadon, Don Felder, and Randy Meisner all gang up and fire Glenn Frey for being an impossible ass right after the release of One Of These Nights, and the band never breaks up and they actually make great records through the eighties and nineties. And no punches are thrown. Don Henley writes and sings lead and plays drums. Randy plays bass and sings like a bird. Bernie adds all the cool country touches that made them an important country rock band, and Felder becomes a guitar legend. No Walsh, no Schmidt, and no trying to turn the band into a hard rock group. Wouldn't that have been nice?

As a reminder of how good the Eagles were at doing country rock...here's one of the greatest country rock songs ever. It's one of two cover songs on the On The Border album. That's Randy Meisner singing lead.
I know it's uncool on BEA to like the Eagles. Well, I do. So there. Any thoughts on my little Eagles dream? Any thoughts on the music they made? _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Undeniably has some wonderful moments but is overblown and over produced.
NB - I’m assuming that I don’t have to tell you about Poco but just wanted to add that they were such a great band as well, criss crossing with the eagles on their journey through the country rock landscape. Both acts deserve a little more love

Poco is absolutely a favorite of mine. They definitely are an underrated act. Born out of the remains of Buffalo Springfield. And they always stayed pretty true to their sound.
As for Eagles...their earlier days tend to be swallowed up by Hotel California and The Long Run and their needing to play Rocky Mountain Way at every show they did from even before Walsh joined them. As for their reunion...well, some things are better left alone after they die. They did end up being a pretty good tribute band, though.
It's also easy to overlook the facts about this album: it was the first to ever be officially certified as Platinum (which became a thing the year it was released). It was also the best selling album in the US in the 20th century (until 2009). And not one of these songs feature Joe Walsh of Timothy Schmidt...it was before Hotel California. And I can bet that everyone here can sing along with every single song on it.

I only ever got to see them live once and it was a later career lineup. Sooooooo dull. No spark. I should’ve stayed at home and listened to the albums rather that forked out a fortune. Very disappointing live.
