Random thoughts that absolutely no one inquired about...
Closest film equivalents to Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea...
Metropolis - Fritz Lang (8.4/10) ... among candidates it is the closest in quality similarity, closest in emotional arc, consistency or "peaks & valleys" of emotional intensity pretty much all of the way through (considerable similarities between the two)... has some parallels in terms of themes and types of emotion too, how heart on sleeve it is, how one can draw parallels with its religious convictions and themes, its love and heartbreak themes, and parallels between its underworld, tyrannical class system and, in some ways, Aeroplane's WW2 themes (Anne Frank, etc) and Nazi concentration camps. As well as parallels with its visual style/amalgamation which comes close to a "retro-futuristic" aesthetic (among its many aesthetics between expressionism, art deco, etc). In that sense it runs fairly parallel to Aeroplane's concerns in both the past and the present, drawing from music of WW II and earlier periods while also modern and vibrant indie-folk and bordering on nearly "punk" values (or DIY, low-fi, haphazard technique, indie creed). The main thing missing is the true devastation and sadness permeating Aeroplane. In Metropolis this emotional pull is kinda-sorta there but it is very surface level in comparison (his yearning for the girl, the energetic and breathless yearning and action towards freedom from pain/slavery) and even if it matches Aeroplane in liveliness or vigor, it is not nearly as evident in its real-life concern nor pain nor nearly as deeply moving. If Metropolis also accomplished this, it would probably be powerful enough for the same rating (8.9 vs 8.4 last revisited).
City of Lost Children - Jean Jeunet (7.6-7.8/10) ... similar parallels in its vision and themes, as with Metropolis, though here a real sadness, trauma, more permeates the proceedings. However, it is simply not visceral enough or truly personal/heartbreaking enough (would need to, approximately, double its intensity and momentum, closer to that of Metropolis, while somehow also increasing how devastating or traumatic it is wanting to be). It would probably need a stronger more no-holds-barred, greater more sympathetic attachment to a lead performance to pull that off.
Forrest Gump - Robert Zemeckis (7.4/10) ... will add some thoughts
Brand Upon the Brain - Guy Maddin (7.2/10) ... its been years since I've watched this, but it is perhaps the closest in terms of how one would expect the visual world of a film equivalent of the album to look aesthetically. And there are several parallel themes. However, unless a revisit proves otherwise, it probably isn't emotional enough (in that I don't recall it drawing any particularly emotional attachment to a main protagonist). It's probably too "on the outside looking in" to more completely match the unshakable emotional feeling of Aeroplane speaking so directly to the listener, the personal conviction and immersion into it, even if aesthetically it seems to have all its intentions in the right place.
Maybe... (seem like solid possibilities, may need to revisit while thinking with such parallels in mind)
Underground - Emir Kusturica (8.2/10)
The Dance of Reality - Alejandro Jodorowski (7.9/10) _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings

I'm about an hour into T2 Trainspotting and am curious how people feel about this follow up to the classic, masterful first Trainspotting (still among the most riveting, fresh "blackly comic" films of the 90s).
No spoilers though please. I should be through the movie late Thurs evening and don't want to know where it all ends up, so keep that out of the comments if you don't mind! It already has its hands full following the original, don't want to lose the surprises too!
I looked at it on RYM and saw 2017 and was thinking "WTF!?" -- shocked that it came out 8 years ago!? How has time flown like this?? I swear it was 2, maybe 3 years ago, that I was seeing trailers for it and reminding myself to catch it at some point soon. Now here we are... ๐ค _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings

NOTE: This is not a list that is ordered exclusively by how funny the films are (absolute funniest at the top, least funny at the bottom). It is more accurate to say it is a list of the best films where comedy (including black or darker comedies, comedic-satires, and so on...) happens to be a major genre/theme of the selection, listed in order by their overall quality (as in my overall criteria: emotionally, conceptually, creatively). It would also be more accurate to say that the higher on the list, the more ingenuity and meaning the comedy will tend to have on average. There are some films (lower on the list) that have made me laugh harder than some, or even most, of the films higher on the list. However, the films in the higher rankings are more significant experiences, better overall films (usually in more ways beyond comedy alone) and their comedy, even when it is not being "laugh-out-loud" funny, tends to have more ingenuity, more meaning, provoke more thought or even a greater multitude of feelings, emotions, reactions than just laughter. And it will tend to be more permanently watchable, to remain compelling after countless revisits, with fewer (if any) diminishing returns.

Romantic Comedy Recommendations/Haven't Seen:
NOTE: Scaruffi's rating to the right of title in parenthesis, to give general order of importance for me ... plus asterisks means it's one of his "unofficial" ratings, which often means he hasn't seen it yet (especially those from the 1990s forward). In such cases, the rating is just an estimate based on his favorite critics until he does and rates it himself...

Running Log - Comedy Films - Updates Ratings/Rankings...
La Dolce Vita - Federico Fellini (1960) ...simply added to my Comedy Films list whereas before it was missing... (same rating as it has been for years: 8.4/10)
Holy Mountain - Alejandro Jodorowsky (1973)7.9/10 to 8.1/10 ...update from several months ago...
The City of Lost Children - Jean-Pierre Jeunet (1995)7.2/10 to 7.4/10; 7.4/10 to 7.6/10 Celine and Julie Go Boating - Jacques Rivette (1974)7.5/10...added, whereas before it was missing ... rating from a long time ago ("tentative")
Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Stanley Kubrick (1964)7.6/10 to 7.5/10 Delicatessen - Jean-Pierre Jeunet (1991)7.4/10 to 7.3/10 ...update from several months ago...
Crank - Mark Neveldine / Brian Taylor (2006)7.3/10 Poor Things - Yorgos Lanthimos (2023) ...added to Comedy list whereas before it was only on my "Greatest" overall films list (7.3, though "tentative/may need revisit") ... haven't seen since Christmas time 2023 when it opened in theaters, need to see again to be sure (at the time I thought it was somewhere around 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and this will likely stand, so this rating should be close nevertheless)
Adaptation - Spike Jonze (2002)7.2/10 (no change... "probably -- not necessarily final") Magnolia - Paul Thomas Anderson (1999)7.2/10 ...added , whereas before it was missing (questionable genre selection...)
What About Bob? - Frank Oz (1991)Not Rated or "tentative 6.6/10" to 7.2/10 Barry Lyndon - Stanley Kubrick (1975)Not Rated to 7.0/10 ...finally adding to Comedy list... rating very tentative -- most recently viewed about 10 years ago... genre selection (for Comedy) also arguable ... needs a revisit to better judge on both counts... (note that I've rated this pretty much every where between 6.5 or so and 7.5 or so before, so this rating is basically just an estimate for now in between those points)
Everything Everywhere All at Once - Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (2022)6.9/10 to 7.0/10 This is Spinal Tap - Rob Reiner (1984)Not Rated to 7.0/10 ...Rating not truly new but an estimate from years ago, "tentative" ...finally added this film, whereas before it had somehow (not realizing it) been missing from any of my lists all these years? Unfortunately, Reiner's passing reminded me... (RIP) ... I do plan on revisiting during this round of viewings...
Gremlins 2: The New Batch - Joe Dante (1990)"tentative 6.6/10" to 7.0/10 ...Hadn't seen in god knows how long, since the 90s??? ... A raucous satire with many inspirations behind it (from as far afield as Robocop, to Ghostbusters, to Body Snatchers, to Aliens, to Looney Tunes, to Marx Bros, to, etc...directly quoting or surely inspired by these and more...), including being wildly self-referential of the original (even interrupting the film and breaking the fourth wall in its self-reverence). Its greatness is not in how "subtle" or "deep" its cinematic language and gags, but how wildly chaotic and absurd it gets while erecting all these inspirations and quotations into its own chaos, and in especially how the Gremlins are essentially demons wreaking havoc on consumerism and corporate greed, haunting all of its sinners (and mimicking, mocking, them), who yet remain oblivious of their sins through the very end; also metaphor for Dante's rebuttal of the film itself (not wanting to make a sequel to begin with, laying waste to his own, the studios, intentions while simultaneously expressing them) ... With this revisit and upgrade, the internal question to myself is whether or not it might actually be superior to the original. I am wondering if this should may be even 7.1 or possibly higher. Currently, I am putting it right beside the original in my Comedy list (at 7.0) but this may still change. Another point (in its favor for a higher rating) is that it clearly played a major part in inspiring Burton's Mars Attacks which I have at 7.1 (sometimes higher) while Scaruffi rates that as high as 7.4... Either way, I'll probably want to revisit the original first (and probably Mars Attacks too, comparing...) to better decide...
Naked Gun 2 1/2 - David Zucker (1991)Not Rated or "tentative 6.0" to 7.0/10 ...Hadn't seen this in at least 15 years so was a treat to revisit ... possibly the best of the series, even if I could say the first one is maybe superior up until (roughly) the last fourth (of each). The last Act or so of 2 1/2 reaches the heights of comedic masterpieces like Airplane, with a series of ingenius gags that never lets up, among the high points of 1990s comedy. Rest of the film is always amusing or funny and relentlessly satiric as well (of bad guys, of the president and his wife, of etiquette, of politics, of suspense films, of buddy cop films, of police and detectives in general and their brilliance at solving the mystery, etc, with countless quotations including the hilarious tribute to Ghost's love scene...) ...and it avoids too much repetition with the original (no small feat), always finding new ways to express its wit, humor, satire, with Neilsen's dead pan, oblivious stupidity among the great characters (and most useless, inadvertently winning despite himself...) in the history of comedy...
Sexy Beast - Jonathan Glazer (2000)6.9/10 ... added to Comedy list, "tentative" rating from a long time ago, needs revisit at some point...
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty - Ben Stiller (2013)6.9/10 Analyze This - Harold Ramis (1999)6.9/10..."tentative" rating from years ago, still need to revisit
48 Hours - Walter Hill (1982)6.6/10 to 6.9/10 ...update from several months ago...
Stranger Than Fiction โ Marc Forster (2006)6.8/10 (no change) ... Could be 6.9-7.0 but at least for now decided that 6.8 is (probably) accurate, fwiw... may change my mind as I revisit some others...
Bad Santa - Terry Zwigoff (2003)6.8/10 (no change) ... Another one that might change as I watch/re-watch some others... still kind of getting my bearings with film during this Christmas season, after my time off spent getting sloshed at Miami beach (that's a reference to the film, not serious... ๐ )
Labyrinth - Jim Henson (1986)6.4/10 to 6.8/10 ...added to Comedy list "questionable genre selection"
Office Space - Mike Judge (1999)6.7/10 to 6.8/10 Meet the Parents - Jay Roach (2000)Not Rated or "tentative 6.2/10" to 6.8/10 Clifford - Paul Flaherty (1994)Not Rated or "tentative 5.3/10" to 6.8/10 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - Frank Oz (1988)6.5/10 to 6.8/10 Wolf - Mike Nichols (1994)6.8/10 ... "tentative" rating, estimated from several years ago, needs revisit...
Small Soldiers - Joe Dante (1998)6.7/10 ...tentative rating, estimate from 27 years ago (upon release), needs revisit...
Twins - Ivan Reitman (1988)Not Rated or "tentative 6.0/10" to 6.7/10 Heartbreakers - David Mirkin (2001)Not Rated or "tentative 6.7/10" to 6.7/10 Field of Dreams - Phil Alden Robinson (1989)6.6/10, no change... Trading Places - John Landis (1983)6.5/10 ... "tentative" rating, estimated from several years ago, needs revisit...
Crank: High Voltage - Mark Neveldine / Brian Taylor (2009)6.5/10 Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - Alejandro Gonzรกlez Iรฑรกrritu (2014)6.5/10 ...forgot to include this on the Comedy list...tentative rating, haven't seen since release 11 years ago, needs revisit...
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Mel Stuart (1971)Not Rated to 6.5/10; 6.5/10 to 6.4/10 ... possibly 6.8 or so... And now for some "RAMBLING THOUGHTS BY AFTERHOURS" ๐ค ...qualitative cut off point for 6.8 plus or minus for children's films/Fantasy is The Neverending Story (barely 6.8...), so it comes down to whether or not this is slightly above or below that... all things considered, a tough call... Neverending Story may achieve a greater sense of wonder, emotional, thematic momentum and impact, even if Dahl's themes are ultimately more interesting on their own in Wonka... Cinematically, Neverending Story may be the greater achievement due both to superior visual sense and wonder, achieved technically, edited to a greater momentum, tension between its "parallel universes", ultimately, more drama, and so on... Wonka is a fine film but too often simply "shows" things happening (with mostly stationary camera, more or less unadorned by cinematography that could make it seem more wondrous or visionary, and/or applying a rather basic composition of its scenes/action ... "generally" with some exceptions of course) ... City of Lost Children takes up more or less similar themes and predicaments, though obviously far more compelling and fascinating visually, cinematographically (even if one allows for technical advance, film-making prowess, between them and relative to period -- relative to the quarter century between them), achieving both more awe and wonder, more sinister, darkness, tension, ambiguity and immersion between dream/nightmare ...more visionary, more impact, etc... Wonka is pretty firmly stationed in the techniques, cinematic craft, visual sense (more or less) of Capra films from as far back as 1939 (like the composition, camera work, editing of Mr Smith ... characterizations of the protagonists, family, the crowd of Capra or Vidor...) crossed with the rather stationary visual imagination of Wizard of Oz (also 1939; sets only, after the tornado largely unadorned by cinematographic imagination to make it yet more visionary and immersive...), whereas an early Fantasy film even as far back as 1927 like Lang's Metropolis, uses and achieves quite a bit more expressive, impactful, stylish, (and more interesting, compelling) sets and effects with resourceful craft, combined with much tighter montage, editing and more visceral staging and action, to achieve far more energy, momentum, emotional impact, etc (Wonka only occasionally starts to approach such at some junctures in the film, but could've used more of...) ... or see, for example, Zardoz -- obviously a very different type of Fantasy film, and certainly not for children -- but nevertheless, made only a year later, yet employs quite a bit more visual imagination, cinematographic ingenuity, on even half the budget; never mind films like Gilliam's Time Bandits (only a decade later) or Brazil (14 years later) seem to exist in almost entirely different mediums (far more visionary, more visually extraordinary, more immersive...) ... So, to continue thoroughly beating a dead horse, Wonka seems slightly below Neverending, perhaps slightly above Wizard of Oz (though my last rating of 6.4 might be a little low in retrospect...) and then one can take a film like City of Lost Children (7.4 last time I watched several months ago, and at least plus-0.5 superior to Wonka...) gives it a point to compare up to and, between this and Wizard of Oz and then Neverending Story, leaves one a few "poles" to rate and rank it between or around ... any way, just giving a general set of parameters I'm thinking about it within and some (rather miscellaneous and scattered) reasons as to why -- just in case one thinks the 6.5 seems too low at a glance while this film has been gaining more and more acclaim since, especially, Wilder's death ... for the record, I like the film in many ways btw, it is a very fine children's film with darker/sinister undertones and underlying themes that symbolize its action and consequences (including the two-faced ambiguity of Wonka himself), a joy to revisit it after so many years...
The Sandlot - David M. Evans (1993)6.1/10 ... "tentative" rating, estimated, haven't seen in several years, still need to revisit
Primary Colors - Mike Nichols (1998)6.1/10 ... "tentative" rating, estimated, haven't seen in several years, still need to revisit
T2 Trainspotting - Danny Boyle (2017)6.1/10 ...very difficult film to rate imo because it is technically impeccable, visually striking, well-acted, etc, and at least tries to not get too sucked into obvious "sequel-itis" (as in, it has plenty of alternate comments upon, but not just an utter repeat of the original ... valiantly attempts a different angle... uses its own energy towards more or less different ends instead of just recreating the original...), but it's efforts at nostalgia didn't especially work (they weren't an utter failure either; mostly neutral or mildly interesting and/or mildly affecting, blackly comical...). Boyle tries dozens of visual tricks and Trainspotting/Fight Club/Requiem for a Dream/Clockwork Orange-style montages/techniques/visuals to immerse one in the characters struggles/world view/mental states. It no doubt has its moments and is never less than interesting to watch but it probably overshoots its attempts and lacks the amazing efficiency of the original (no wasted sequences, everything essential...), and thus can't match its sense of qualitative momentum (everything hits, keeps hitting comically and dramatically and otherwise, no real "qualitative valleys"), is just less riveting, less fresh, less impactful at what its going for. Best comedy is probably the "Catholics" sequence. Best drama and film-making (while remaining blackly comic) is probably the attempted suicide sequence (intentionally not giving away spoilers) -- here Boyle's technical prowess and montage and emotional confluence + impact works the best. Much of it is partially empty even if always technically impressive. That said, as it was such a technical profusion of cinematographic tricks (etc), it's possible there's more to this and it could use a revisit, and it might also help to revisit the original then come back to it right after, as it does seem to reference it (sometimes more subtly) probably more than immediately hit me on this viewing. So I am open to changing my mind...
Kindergarten Cop - Ivan Reitman (1990)Not Rated to 6.0/10 ... finally revisited after...probably 25 years last time I saw it? ... I actually saw this in theatres as a kid when it was released (during a field trip for school, in Oregon, where the film is set), so there is a fun nostalgia factor there and plus I've spent time in Astoria and seen or been to all the locations of the film (not going to them as a fan of the film, but simply in the normal course of life, spending vacation time in Astoria, etc). Anyway, solid all the way through, no real flagging even though predictable. Avg when it comes to drama and action-crime and obligatory romance sub-plot, while it excels when pitting The Terminator versus kindergartners -- because he is so clearly out of his element and this is well-suited to comedy, and Arnold is excellent (perhaps surprisingly at the time) as a comic actor. The kids too are superbly cast and very memorable, with great comic sequences of their own.
Ed Wood - Tim Burton (1994)5.8/10 ... "tentative" rating, haven't seen in several years, still need to revisit
School of Rock - Richard Linklater (2003)Not Rated or "tentative 6.2/10" to 5.7/10 ... RAMBLING BARELY COHERENT THOUGHTS!!! ๐คก ...Jack Black is a bit "too" Jack Black (approaching "Ace Ventura: Music School Teacher"...) for this to work as well as it could, and although it works enough to remain brisk and mildly entertaining throughout, it is also just hard to believe that the school could possibly be as stupid as they are, and how this could realistically be missed for 3 weeks that he wasn't really teaching anything other than music -- not a single time being caught? (another thing that is hard to believe is the short time line of how all this happens, how much music and synergy was accomplished despite so little time to practice and learn a whole new music...). One kind of has to pretty much completely leave their brain at the door, I suppose... The adult characters (especially Black and the principal) border a bit too heavily on caricatures and are hard to believe as real people. The story and trajectory of what happens, the overcoming of the obvious incoming conflict/reveal tearing their plan down, too, is all very predictable and requires a bit too much suspension of disbelief (all the parents are fine in the end just like that?) ... For starters, the school despite being "one of the best" doesn't do background checks, doesn't ask for his ID ... etc?. In a sense -- yes, it is a comedy -- so it doesn't desperately need to be realistic, but on the other hand, it is also shot and staged as if entirely based in realism, and for the film to work better than it does it has to be a bit more believable to give it enough credence and foundation for its (minor) emotional pay off to work (and in this case, it barely manages to). Seeing them play is fun and the finale is fun, even if it is always teetering on the edge of a bit too much suspension of disbelief and a bit too much stupidity in how it all plays out. Still, all in all, its a fun movie -- if quite overrated -- the kids are charismatic (even if the diversity of them and their plethora of skills are a bit too "perfect", another suspension of disbelief...) and Jack Black has (off and on) barely enough winning scenes for it to work, and it does spark just enough interest to keep one rooting for him and the students through the end, even if ultimately there isn't much gained from it (the emotional/thematic development of him ironically becoming responsible, thinking of others instead of selfish, and the kids ironically learning more important lessons than they might've learned in school from a real teacher, and the parents being 100% forgiving in the end, is fine and all I guess, but also obvious, hugely predictable and derivative of countless TV shows and movies with fundamentally the exact same trajectory and development). The film is brisk enough (so one doesn't over-think it?) and its energy (despite its stupidity) keeps things moving and fun, just enough for the film to work on a surface level of emotional/thematic pay-off...
Ghostbusters II - Ivan Reitman (1989)Not Rated to 5.5/10 (tentative, still under consideration) Six Days Seven Nights - Ivan Reitman (1998)Not Rated to 5.5/10 ...Simply forgot to add to the Comedy list... haven't watched this since the late 90's or maybe early 2000s...
Brewster's Millions - Walter Hill (1985)5.5/10 ... "tentative" rating, haven't seen in several years, needs revisit
Bottle Rocket - Wes Anderson (1996)5.5/10 ... "tentative" rating, haven't seen in several years, needs revisit
Earth Girls Are Easy - Julian Temple (1988)5.3/10 ...tentative, needs revisit, last watched approx 5-10 years ago...
Idiocracy - Mike Judge (2006)5.8/10 to 5.3/10 Crocodile Dundee - Peter Faiman (1986)Not Rated to 5.0/10; 5.0/10 to 5.2/10 ... Hadn't seen in at least 20 years ... simple, amusing, very predictable. The best thing about it is that it is a relatively efficient, pleasant comedy that combines the flip sides of two "fish out of water" stories into halves of the film as a single comedy. The whole movie is obviously pretty stupid (especially the Romantic aspect between the woman and two men -- she is essentially cheating in each half of the film -- but being a Romantic comedy treats this as a non-issue ethically, giving Dundee no second thoughts about her once she leans towards him, and then the predictable resolution without conflict...?...idk... ๐ค ...anyway not that important being a silly, rather useless film, but just thought I'd mention this...). Maintains mild interest, amusing jokes for the most part throughout, and is a mildly original take on the fish out of water comedy. It has a charming happy ending.
Ice Age - Christ Wedge (2005)5.2/10..."tentative" rating from years ago, haven't seen since around the time of its release (20 yrs ago), need to revisit...
Shallow Hall - Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly (2001)5.1/10 ...no change in rating from the same "estimated" rating from years back (early 2000s) ... A very predictable film that barely gets by because of its "cringe" premise that is partially successful at being both offensive, somewhat funny, and (mildly) touching at the same time (from the female perspective, not Jack Black's). Jack Black as usual is a complete moron and barely passable here mainly because he reigns it in a bit and makes a sorta valiant attempt (for him) at being "real" (during the more serious parts). Paltrow is the gem of the film, managing empathy while alternately being the punch line of most of the jokes. She almost manages to bring enough heart and emotion into the film (at moments, does, such as the restaurant scene near the end), to increase the depth from utter stupidity and predictability. But the end when Black inevitably makes things right (in the same cliched ways it always happens in these films) doesn't trust its more interesting convictions (towards the drama it was starting to create) and sticks to its mediocre rom-com guns instead of going for a deeper expressive balance between drama and comedy; of course, I'm sure the director was trapped by Black's limitations as an actor as well -- again, Paltrow completely outshines him... It was also a good decision to partially hide her actual appearance throughout the film until near the end... unfortunately, the film could not possibly be more "cookie cutter" in its cinematic language, visual style ...there is basically no personal stamp on it whatsoever, could've been directed by any rom-com director(s) of the period...this is not as problematic being a rom-com-cringe comedy (which are often trying to look stupid or even intentionally in opposition to cinematic "art" or aesthetic aims...), as it would be for a film attempting a more artistic statement, but nevertheless the main point is more how it literally looks and moves cinematically like there is virtually no individual personality involved beyond the most obvious direction and visual sense imaginable (the only exception being how Paltrow is alternately shot, presented) ... again, whats more interesting about it is basically carried on the back of Paltrow's performance (as both POVs of her character) and the touch of ingenuity in how this is presented and in the emotional/thematic confluence/balance of its premise between cringe-comedy and (minor) drama -- salvaging the rest from a lower rating...
The Distinguished Gentleman - Jonathan Lynn (1992)5.1/10 ..."tentative" rating, estimated from several years ago, needs revisit

FAMILIAR ROCK/JAZZ ALBUMS - RE-RATED:
A Love Supreme - John Coltrane (1964) 9.1/10 to 9.3/10 ... one of the most difficult ratings decisions I've made in a while. It is just so hard to put -- really anything -- above the likes of The Doors/VU and Nico as it is... I revisited several times to be sure, across various weeks, at first upgrading 9.0 to 9.1 while tentatively noting that it "seemed more like 9.2 or possibly 9.3"... Anyone familiar enough historically with my ratings of Jazz will know this isn't the first time it has been 9.3, and was in the 9.3-9.5 range for years actually, while even back around 2005-2007 or something like that A Love Supreme held my very top spot for Rock and Jazz before eventually being overtaken by TMR, Rock Bottom and Black Saint at the time... However, even that in mind, placing something that high has always been a major decision as it is an almost impossible standard to reach (and maintain) on my list -- thus why I was so tentative and am already doubting myself a little even now after having done so... That said, it has indeed held up over multiple listens at "minimum 9.2" and "probably 9.3" so I'm going with it... It is great to have it back and great to have a Jazz 9.3+ even if I can't guarantee I won't change my mind again!! Black Saint has recently come with similar thoughts, more or less, so be on the look out for a possible upgrade for that one too...

ALSO:
Pursuance + Psalm - John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - Tracks 3 & 4 (Track #3 on Original LP) (1964)8.5/10 to 8.7/10
I know I've discussed this before but it's been ages...
Some factors to consider if you want to start hearing it as a 9.3-level masterpiece (or thereabouts)...
Coltrane's playing is not just "spastic" or "free" or improvised sax, but is actually mimicking human vocal patterns, yearnings, cries (and so on) -- uttering and attempting to utter phrases wherein the language of his sax play is on the order of syllabic phrasings and lines. These range from urges and unutterable, interrupted, passages (emotive, even violent and pained, struggles to find the words or complete phrases) to the eventual poetic, bowed, hymned elocution of the finale before the word or feeling or beholding of God.
In listening to this also pay attention to the astounding facet in his playing that he is so often unfurling "sheets" of rapid changes and developments in phrase and emotive variegation (word-to-word, clause-to-clause if these were actual sentences), that unwind and develop and traverse virtually possessed states of expressivity often in a "single breath" (without break to grab for air) or even when more than this, far fewer than seems human. This is notable immediately from Acknowledgement forward and becomes incredibly emotional because it is as if he is trying to say everything with such conviction, so overcome by emotion, so stunned with the mind racing of religious visions or spiritual feeling, that he can barely contain himself.
The playing and structure of the whole and each of its parts within is in constant diametric (opposing) ends but also simultaneously fused, seamless -- one of the most astonishing constructions, most genius works of compositional fusion/unity, in music history. Almost indecipherably, fluctuating continuously, momentously, it is constantly running on the border of each (in confluence, and alternately) modal, free, improvised, outward, expressive, while also highly unified, rational, formal, analytic, contemplated, thoughtful, inward (not just all the instruments together, but even the individual playing of each instrument tends towards a simultaneity of expressively, inwardly 'intellectual' while also 'spontaneous', emotionally unrestrained -- and not just Coltrane's sax even if this makes the most of these diametric sides; but certainly Jones too, while also even in Tyner's piano and Garrison's bass...). Scaruffi briefly notes that it combines "African nationalism, Indian spirituality, western rationality". What he is likely referring to (in general, perhaps more easily decipherable, relatable, concepts) is the fact that even while Coltrane is furiously leaning into virtually free form modal, improvised, play, (bordering on "spirituals" and furious sermons) it is uniformly based or develops from or into, or turns out to be nevertheless rational and "composed" -- the work is an amalgamation of all these "modes" at once (or even when not completely simultaneous, one rapidly follows or seamless becomes the other), a furious composition that alternates them seamlessly or even explodes them all simultaneously as "one", virtually new, genre-fusion of spiritual jazz (combining continents, fusing world-views, fusing forms of spiritual address). It always fundamentally based on motifs/themes (from the beginning the earliest notes and eventually the voice, after traversing through the whole of his sax, "A Love Supreme ... A Love Supreme... etc") and this retains a sense of discipline and 'composure' (no matter how "free" it becomes), through underlying "theme and variation" and "cyclic theme", variegated to extremes throughout all four movements -- again, composed, resolved, no matter how free, how emotively unhinged, how furious the passage becomes at any point. All the instruments trade places in these regards and traverse their own journeys of these modes ESPECIALLY Coltrane's sax and Jones percussion (which each become technically and emotionally unrecognizable from their humble beginnings before thereafter bowing and humbled before God in the finale). If you pay close attention throughout of how seamlessly the pieces are moulding and changing and then re-forming between these modes, between "spontaneity" and "rational", between "free" and "formal or structured", between "furosity of emotion" and "analytical/contemplation", one further and further hears BOTH such diametric sides within each mode, often simultaneously but nevertheless within the same passage (no matter how furious and free and unhinged, the passage will also be analytical and structured, rationally worked out and concluded, in the same ... etc).
These are just some main points to consider... If you can track with at least these points (and surely there is more that could be said, pin-pointed) the work should become virtually unfathomable and overwhelming, sensory overload, miraculous... _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings
Level 8: actually coming full circle from the early days and taking the time to grasp the emotional and conceptual content of every shot of Citizen Kane, recognizing it as probably the most profound film ever made, after initially determining when between Level 1 and Level 3, that it was surely "overrated" and "empty" and having argued this violently among cinephiles who were Level 8
Level 9: realizing your life as a cinephile is a mobius strip on the order of Polanski's Chinatown and that you now, Citizen Kane having been grasped and under your belt, are persistently rewatching films with a new more refined understanding of the language of cinema and are in effect watching yourself from the past while in the present having already seen yourself based in a past that was unfolding ineluctably as if it had already happened or was bound to happen -- and that your film-going experience, perhaps your entire life, may be a reckoning with this uncanny phenomena
Level 10: you took me a little too seriously when reading the above and need to get out more, meet some people, rub noses with real life and situations, feel real things, real friends, develop a romantic relationship, find true love, absorb failures, feel hope and desire and live life to the fullest
Level 11: Level 10 was so Hollywood-ian and AfterHours is full of shit
Level 12: Nostalghia is actually Tarkovsky's best film, not his worst. I now see and feel (deeply) how the first person perspective and movement/choreography of the camera is in dialect and tension with the autobiographical, more "third person", surrogate of Tarkovsky (the protagonist) "inside" the film, his disposition, movement and actions. This constant relay between (Tarkovsky) himself on the "outside" generates a profound inner and conflicted poetry, introspective existential and spiritual ruminations, with a yearning dialect about and between himself (or his perspective of himself) on the "inside", and always in metaphorical correlation with the filmed and surrounding environments as ruins and reflections of the self, of memory and nostalgia (perplexed, immersed, between Italy and Russia) from that of past or desperate life and forgotten, lost, civilization -- and that lost, longing past in newfound, afflicted tension with the present. Like Tarvkosky, like his camera in search to and with his surrogate, I too am trying to find and understand myself through the cinematic act and shall live my life in this movie of my own making
๐ค
Okay, okay... I'm really just messing around, making this up as I go and got on a roll that was (mostly!) satirical (even if the cinematic points/allusions about Chinatown and Nostalghia are pretty legit) _________________ Best Classical Best Films Best Paintings
