Not a huge Styx fan but I have a soft spot for this album. I saw them live on the tour promoting this album.
I was heavily into bands like Black Sabbath at the time and a friend suggested that we go and see Styx so we did (I was open t hearing anything vaguely rock related at that point) and I actually enjoyed the music and it was the best show that i had ever seen (up to that point) |
As a teenager, my best friend had a '77 Trans Am. Incl. bird on the hood. We cruised Denver. A lot. We cruised to meet girls. And we met them. A lot. The music we had in the car was important. When it was just the guys, we listened to Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Manfred Mann, Rush, Yes...you get the picture. When we had girls in the car, out came the Journey. And most definitely, out came the Styx. Girls at that time loved Journey and Styx. We wanted to be with the girls, so we happily obliged by having those albums ready to go.
I saw Styx on the tour for this album. August 30, 1977, to be exact. Styx opened for Alice Cooper (which was the worst show I had ever seen until My Morning Jacket in the early 2010's). They were okay. They only played six songs. They barely moved. The guitars sounded great.
I find it shameful what Tommy Shaw and James Young have done with Styx. The band's founder, main vocalist, main songwriter and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung, was kicked out of the band in 1999 for having the flu and needing time to recover before touring. Shaw and Young replaced him, and in court won the right to use the name Styx. They have since been touring (25 years and counting) without DeYoung, playing his songs, and dragging the name into the ground as basically a high rent tribute band. Young is at least an original member (who wrote one song per album, ala Ringo): Shaw joined on their sixth album, Crystal Ball, and was always a secondary vocalist and writer to DeYoung.
Anyway. Yeah. _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold
