LedZep isn't wrong about what the song is supposed to be about, but at the same time, the late-lamented Mark Hollis (the songwriter) wasn't exactly known for lyrical simplicity either. In fact, I'd say his lyrics tended to be more ambiguous than most, and as we both know, that isn't usually a sought-after characteristic among Christian/gospel recording artists.
If you're looking for legitimate and unambiguous attempts at gospel styling from artists you might never have expected it from, the first track I'd recommend is probably "Psalm," from Roxy Music's Stranded LP:
There are several live versions of this on Youtube as well, but when they played the song live they usually didn't have the organ playing through the fast Leslie speaker, which is really what puts it over the top, gospel-wise. Roxy Music were far from being a "Christian band" though — AFAIK the only other clear example of them using Christian themes in their lyrics was "Triptych" from Country Life, which frankly is one of their least-memorable songs.
These aren't really my style, but you wouldn't know that. Thanks for sharing and participating in my thread anyway. Maybe someone else here will like those.
I love Aaron Neville's gospel album "I Know I've Been Changed". Unfortunately, for some reason, it isn't on YouTube or Spotify anymore, but there is one track from that album that's still on YouTube. My favorite track on that album is "Don't Let the Devil Ride", but the only track from that album that's still on YouTube is "Oh Freedom", so that's the only one I can post here. Anyway, I really enjoy the entire album.
