Sticking with my nom for sure here. Verlaine is easily my favorite punk-related guitarist of all time, and generally just amazing. Marquee Moon is pretty much my definitive guitar album, and the title track off that album may actually be my favorite guitar composition thing ever. The way he uses his virtuosity to benefit the songs really puts him a league above the Steve Vais of the world in my eyes, because there's no doubt in my mind he could play like that if he wanted to. There's an inherent musicality in his playing that really speaks to me as having a true understanding of what guitar can do and how melodic and beautiful it can be while still benefiting the song. Anyways, Television and Tom Verlaine are great, plus he made jazzmasters cool, what's not to love?

Tom Verlaine gets my vote. Richard Lloyd, Television's other guitarist, is great too, while providing some great technicality, but I think the reason Verlaine stands out is because of his subdued way of playing sometimes. The almost impromptu-like solo of the title track to Marquee Moon demonstrates his playing very well. Entering in with jolted movements but gradually getting more and more obvious and it builds up to something quite enchanting. Quite frankly, that solo is just as brilliant and ahead of its time as it was back in 1977.
