I like this idea. Albums that surprisingly (to me) don't even make the top 1000.

Weigh in with albums you think I missed... Make your own similar list...

This is a really awesome idea. I like it a lot. I think there are lots of things on this list I think were very fairly forgotten (Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles, and the New Pornographers are the main ones that come to mind), but there's lots of stuff on here I'm surprised to see outside of the Top 1000. Like, Os Mutantes, Nascimento/Borges, and Cannibal Ox picks are wildly popular on the forums and lots of other places on the Internet, and the former two have the right vintage for the unfair slant of the charts in general to dinosaurs to accommodate them. Lots of underrated favorites of mine that will hopefully get exposure from this list, as well - Chico Buarque and the Tragically Hip choice on here are awesome. Really impressed and considering making my own.

We don't have any Daniel Johnston in the top 1000? Not Yip, not Hi How Are You, not 1990, not my favorite Don't Be Scared, nothing? Really? Wow ...

I may steal this idea for a chart, its sort of interesting

Oh yes, great topic for a good discussion. Also to get some new inspiration!!
For me completely underrated here are in general The Weakerthans (Left and Leaving, The Reconstruction Site). Indie-Folk-Rock at his best, with great lyrics. Deeply moving band.
Also Nada Surf, especially the newest album The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy) is a much better than rank 10.557 (and it is getting nearly allits points from me Very Happy ).

Awesome feedback. Some people adore Crystle Castles. I've never given Two Door Cinema a shot. I disagree about NP; they're hugely adored in some pretty wide circles.

To be fair , I consider Daniel Johnston pretty much unlistenable -- but some of his songs are very elemental.

Weakerthans! Yes, great suggestion!

Ravedeath and Lemon of Pink aren't popular? Like it didn't seem like ppl were really paying attn to Tim Hecker until that one, and I coulda sworn everyone was all over Lemon of Pink.

Realistically, y'all are talking about albums that would be surprising to see in the top 1000...as in the masses haven't really heard of these people. Because of this, I'd be surprised to see any of the albums mentioned in the top 1000.

Romanelli...

I think it's surprising that Spiderland is as high as it is. Or, say, NMH, a band a lot of people still have never heard of -- top 20 of all time? The list goes on of bands in BEA's top 500 even who are out of the ordinary: Nick Drake and Nick Cave are in the top 1000. And yet not every acclaimed cult band who made at least one very good album finds a spot in the top 1000 and some acclaimed bands are very, very low.

Personally I don't really get Spiderland (or Loveless or Dolittle, for that matter). I love NMH, GBV, and a bunch of other bands that not everyone understands but many of us do.
