Hello.

Currently sitting in a curry house in sunny Cleethorpes and eavesdropping (as you do) on a conversation going on at the table opposite who are banging on about festivals and tattoos. Got me thinking - how important to you is having a partner with the same music taste as you, and how much does their taste influence yours?

To give you some context - Mrs. Dread and I have virtually no musical connection whatsoever. She berates the amount of room my records take up in the house, she makes me put on dreary old rubbish when we're in the car together, and apart from the odd bit of middle ground (60s girl groups, Bowie (but only the ones she knows), Bangles, ELO) we're totally chalk-and-cheese from a musical compatibility standpoint. We've only been to one gig together - The Pipettes at a Student Union in Winchester. I've even given up trying to educate her or open her mind to new things because to her what I play either sounds 'boring' or 'like shouting'. Fact is though I couldn't care less, and strangely enough it's because she likes different stuff to me that I get to go up to London so frequently either to buy records or go to gigs with friends. Suits me fine.

Compare this to me ex - a total soul nut who got me into loads of stuff. After a bitter break-up though I can hardly bring myself to listen to Marvin Gaye anymore.

Question is... does what your other half listen to make a shred of difference? Is music taste important when looking for a partner? Or is it secondary to nice face/legs/arse/knees or whatever?

I think what's most important is having a partner with an open mind towards listening to different music. Having a misalignment with musical tastes doesn't matter to me as long as they are open to trying out new things.

My wife doesn't care much at all about music, but she knows I love it, and she encourages me to buy records, play guitar, go to shows, et cetera. She'll sit down and let me play a concert for her. We'll listen to Clams Casino in the car while I prattle on about the samples he's using. She's not really into the music, and it's kind of awesome. We don't share hobbies. We share life, and we get to encourage each other's hobbies and occasionally try to understand each other through them.

*Edit: We don't have the same hobbies, but we get to share them with each other.

I was pretty charmed when I started dating my wife and found out she had a love for The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (especially Carpet Crawlers). She's an Eno nut and knows all sorts of odd facts about who played on what. I don't think I've ever met a woman who knows more details about music.

We don't agree on everything, though, so we have to stick to certain things when we play music loud in the house when both of us are home.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

My wife and I are pretty different in musical taste, with some things aligning. She's big into the, what I would call, AltNation stuff (because it's the stuff that plays on that satellite radio station). I like that stuff too, I like almost anything, but she's not into most of the other stuff I'm into.

She also complains about the space my records take up, so I'm with you there Jim.

As a Volcel this doesn't really factor in. In fact I'm progressively cutting off more and more interpersonal ties so I can spend more time listening to things and rating/ranking them in the internet.

Scarily similar to weekday evenings at Chez Dread, mon ami. Except my missus is usually stalking people on Facebook whilst I'm pluggin' away...

Yup and Yup.

She does her netflix binge watching and I do my BEA binge listening.

As for taste... I put up with a lot of her top 40 stuff and she can't really stand anything I listen to. I mean truly like each other's music... not really.

Common ground: Motown, I've come to learn to like a little pop more, a little country more, Muse and Green Day... ahahaha. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Oh and the first movie we saw together was Walk the Line. From that experience I was able to get her into Johnny Cash.

Actually this too. Totally supportive of me being in a band.
