It's tough. I love this album, and there are no bad songs, but it definitely lacks cohesion in some key spots. Otherwise, this is terrific, even if it's not my favorite offering from The Decememberists.

Track picks
4. O Valencia!
8. Summersong
9. The Crane Wife 1 And 2
10. Sons And Daughters

3 years ago today I used to listen to nothing but this album & Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear. The medley to all three titular tracks rang out in my head throughout the day whether I wore headphones or not. So naturally, I’ll always have a soft spot for this album and I still think it’s their best work to date. Though in the 2000s they didn’t let up. It’s funny how something like this could come out 2006 with all its traditional folk phases & archaic references and be this excellent.

It's insane how there's almost no recorded versions of summersong being played live on youtube. Does the band have something against their best song?

Anyways, a pretty good album overall. One complaint is that, just like death cab for cutie, it loses momentum with some songs. I get that you want to make songs that feel like they're a part of the album, but cut some of the boring shit dude. When The War Came is so fucking bad.

This was their attempt at a prog rock concept album. My 2nd fav to the mighty Picaresque.
