Appreciate the praise. If there are any albums from this list I hope people add to there queue's, it'd be these:
Guitarra Portuguesa by Carlos Paredes
Can't go wrong here. Instrumental fado. Had a lovely chat with a guy at a Lisbon record shop who told me a couple stories about the album's importance in the area and what it did for the international scene. Fado's always been far more popular as live performance than on wax, let alone as an album (45's were the popular format). It's not a long listen, and it's practically faultless. Just give it a spin.
Instant Composers Pool by Han Bennink /...hn Tchicai
One of ICP's earliest releases, and (possibly?) the gateway for free-form jazz. It's not only a staple of the genre, it's just flat-out good.
John by John Phillips (ZA)
This album's got a bit of hubbub on BEA over the last 2 years, so I'm not surprised if it's not a new face, but it still only has a handful of votes on here. Top-notch 60's folk, right up there with Jackson C Frank, Tim Buckley, Townes Van Zandt, Bert Jansch, and maybe even Nick Drake. Would love if the reissue rumours are true.
Golden Rain by Various Artists
Gamelan comp, but it plays out more like a collective album. About as good as the genre gets.
The 80 Minute Râga by Ali Akbar Khan
One of two Ali Akbar Khan records on this list, but the lesser listened. It's what's it's advertised to be - an 80 minute raga. Despite being the less popular of the two, I'd put Khan's skills and songwork a shade above Shankar.
All Alone by Mal Waldron
And finally, a recent find for me, Waldron's All Alone. Solo piano album released post a 3-year hiatus while Waldron retrained himself at playing after forgetting how following a drug overdose. Rivals Monk.
Probably going to cut the last 5-7 albums on the list and replace them soon. A decade I'm always digging into. _________________ Doubles & Conch
