I've been preferring hopeful happy albums even though my usual pick for when I'm feeling down is depressing albums. But this feels a lot different and I think happy is the way to go. If you're looking for happy, I've been meaning to explore city pop and some of the genres it influenced (like vaporwave) for a while. Just revisited this one, which was the only city pop album I've heard, and it almost feels like being outside in a busy city even sitting alone in my living room.
But if you're looking for something melancholy, I have to imagine American Football's debut sounds pretty good about now. "Stay Home" has never had such high stakes.
Lastly, if you're reeeeally looking for something appropriate (in a miserable way), you could listen to Godspeed's Blaise Bailey Finnegan III. But I warn you: it's almost too on the nose. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
Interesting choices. I like the idea of getting a city-space or any kind of sonic journey from home right now.
Totally get just wanting feel good comfort foods as well. Actually I could go for the first Avalanches album as it does take you on a bit of a journey too.
For some reason I'm feeling drawn towards Berlin Bowie, Talking Heads (or maybe My Life in the Bush of Ghosts). Probably for that claustrophobia and twitchy nervousness. Maybe some Soft Bulletin/ Yoshimi era Lips for the existential themes.
I'm pretty intrigued by that Godspeed album now ๐คฃ
Too many heavy things might not be good but I will probably go for something heavy. On the book front, I read the Plague by Albert Camus a few years back. That was a dark read back then and would but a pretty intense to read right now. I'm certainly considering it though ๐ฒ

I've been getting interested in lo-fi / "outsider" house and techno over the past few months and I've found it works really well when chilling at home. It's party music, but made for hiding in your bedroom. Some recent great finds in this regard are this weird slushy hypnagogic thing:
