Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.2/100, a mean average of 76.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 21.9.

I feel like this is to classical chamber music what Bitches Brew is to Jazz.

Yeah actually disregard my initial comment. Such a significant part of the appeal of this piece is the innate humanity of it, and so I'm hardly doing it any kind of justice by trying to get my enjoyment of it down to a science. As SingingPeasant said, just feel it (spoiler: it feels fucking amazing)

LOVE THIS SO MUCH!
5th movement is my favourite moment, it's just orgasmic, it's suprising that just four instruments sound this magical.
/and ignore dat dividesbyzero's pretentious comment, just play it and feel it, it's best way to enjoy this piece.

This piece man, this piece. Messiaen is a convention defying genius, and Quatuor Pour La Fin Du Temps is his proof. This thing breaks all traditional laws of classical composition, abandoning all ideas of precise and regular metrics and structures, creating an immensely powerfully and ultimately mind bending sense of timelessness and infinite space. I have to wonder where the hell Messiaen got his ideas about song structure, because this shit is way ahead of its time. Anyway I could go on for pages with some cringe-worthy pretentious rambling, but I'll just say that this is fucking awesome and I love it. Highly recommend
