Def Leppard: The first Def leppard song I've ever heard was Photograph. I asked about Def Leppard to a friend and he said Def Leppard was one of his favorites. I started paying attention to more Def Leppard. I had only heard 8 songs one the radio, and songs almost never sound as good on the radio, so I wasn't getting impressed. I was thinking Pour Some Sugar On Me was some generic rock song. I really liked Foolin' though.

Then I heard that the drummer only had 1 arm. I was like "WHA!?" So I started listening to the drumming on their songs on the radio, and I was impressed a one armed man could drum like that. So I bought Vault, their greatest hits album. Great album.

Then I heard the album Hysteria, and the production was fantastic. I enjoyed that album so much I listened to almost the whole thing everyday for a week! I decided to get into more Def Leppard albums, and I became I big fan.

Ever since then, Def leppard has given me a whole new look at pop rock. I'm glad their aren't a lot of bands like Def Leppard, because DL wouldn't be unique anymore. Whenever I hear one of their songs, something stirs within me. An undescribable feeling which I know I'll like for a LOOOOOONG time to come.

That's how Def Leppard became my third favorite band!

To me, a favorite band is a bad that means the world to you. Your favorite band isn't the band that you admit has the most consistent catalogue, or the band that has had the most radio hits, or the best selling band, or the band that sells out the arenas, or the band you think is the most technically proficient. Your favorite band the band that you have a connection with. You listen to their music as though you took part in writing it. You feel proud of their greatest songs and laugh with the band at their worst songs, thinking about how much fun they must have been having. You can admit when a release of theirs is weak but don't let it change your opinion about that band. Not sure how that happened for me, but that's what Led Zeppelin became for me.

Agree, Modest Mouse for me has that personal connection.

I first heard about Animal Collective through a friends of mine who thought that they were overrated, so whenever I saw them mentioned anywhere, I would just shrug it off as garbage. Then I found an old Feels CD for 3 bucks in a record store and thought I'd give it a shot. Now I have over 100 gigs of there music on my computer and all their albums on vinyl. I swear im obsessed. I saw them live in september and was completely blown away. Fan for life.

That's EXACTLY how I feel about Def Leppard, but I would NEVER have loved them as I do if it weren't FOR the radio. Led Zeppelin became my top fave because they have so many songs I enjoy. It has NOTHING to do with cataloguing!

BTW, Jason, you didn't give us YOUR story. Neither did you, Happy.

I heard a couple of Who hits overtime, and my Dad had Tommy and a greatest hits collection, which I listened to endlessly. I eventually got the rest of their albums and became obsessed. I remember playing along to all of Who's Next on drums trying to keep up and forcing myself to get good enough to at least slightly match the recording. That's part of the reason I became a good drummer. But yeah, they just inspired me so much that even though they may not be my most listened to band nowadays, and there may be a few bands that I like just as much like The Clash, I will always say The Who is my favorite band. Seeing Quadrophenia live last night was so damn amazing I can still barely comprehend it.

Edit: Lol

I first heard New Order after I had finished the JD albums and I wanted more, Obviously I didn't get what I wanted, I was actually quite disappointed at first. Needless to say they grew on me though.

Talk Talk
When I first joined BEA, one of the users I immediately fell in love with was theharrisonfords. He had a good mix of everything; he (at the time) had Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock up pretty high on his list, so I thought I'd check them out. Around this time (2009) I discovered Pitchfork and noticed that they had both of those albums ranked highly in their decade lists. So, one summer I checked both albums out. At first I hated them (I listened mostly to punk and straight indie rock at the time); I listened to them well over ten times each and still hated them and thought they sounded the same. I continued to put them on intermittently throughout the next year and they just kept growing. Eventually, they reached my #1 and I've been preaching Talk Talk since. It's a true story of adaptation of the ears.

Tortoise
I don't remember exactly how I found out about them. Someone here (likely Cellar) posted Millions Now Living Will Never Die pretty high, so I decided to check them out. I didn't think much at all on first listen. Then I eventually found TNT and fell in love with a few tracks from that (specifically the first two songs). Since then, my love for them has been like a cancer. They are one of the few bands that I will stand behind their entire discography. I feel my growth on this has been largely personal.

Joanna Newsom
A crush suggested her as Newsom came to tour at Austin. I recognized the album as the perennial favorite of joannajewsom, so I checked it out. I immediately fell in love with everything. I don't know why or how.

Dirty Three
Cellar Door had it pretty high up there, so I thought that I'd try it. It was meh at the time. But eventually it grew on me through independent listening and I love everything from them that I've heard.

Scorpions

I first heard The Best of Rockers 'N' Ballads on the way home from someplace. I was 12 or 13. I put a couple songs into my MP3 because at the time, those were the only two I wanted. But then I listened to the whole album again, and I thought they were pretty cool.

This year, I heard 3 of there albums to fill up my chart. First was "Blackout," which was an OK album for me. Then I heard Love at First Sting, which is now one of my favorite albums. Then I heard there latest one, Sting in the Tail. I didn't expect much from it, but I got a lot more than I bargained for.

So it became official. Scorps is my fourth favorite band. Klaus has a great voice, the guitar is just freaking cool, and I came up with a nickname for them:The Stingers of Metal.

My dad played a lot of AC/DC when I was a kid. Now I love AC/DC. Beats me how it happened beyond that.
