At first I wasn't a fan, but it gets better with every listen, it's really grown on me, it'll never surpass their debut however. _________________

one of my favourites from 2011, "the shrine/ an argument" was a big surprise and is my favourite track from this album. i think they improved from their debut, and that is really good as well.

Pretty far superior to the debut, more variety, better crafted songs, a cooler darker tone, and just some real twists and turns. At times on here they remind me a lot of Simon and Garfunkel! And I feel like I don't get fucking disgusted with big over the top harmonies by the end of this album, unlike their debut.
It's a solid 8.4.
The debut is maybe a 7.9 _________________ -Ryan

Hell yes! sweet progressive-folk with sun-soaked harmonies.

I made the mistake (at least according to most people) to listen to this first and I have not yet grasped their debut (although I have listened to some singles off of it, most notably the beautiful White Winter Hymnal, as well as their masterpiece according to me, Mykonos) although it is far more popular, well known and respected as an essential listen especially regarding the genre it represents. I have to admit this is really likable, you can hear the influence they got from Simon & Garfunkel all over, as well as their vocal harmonies looking up to The Beach Boys. That said, opening with Montezuma is probably its high point and sadly never reaches again these heights (although that acoustic guitar during the end of Sim Sala Bim is insanely good), not to mention the last few tracks are somewhat dull (that noisy jazz part in The Shrine/An Argument feels really out of place). I really like the lyrics, they give a feeling of spontaneous words and thoughts thrown at a piece of paper the moment they were conceived and they have a nice underlying touch of social commentary as well, especially the title track. Overall, this is very good, solid stuff, just not "Best album of its year" exciting and if you ask me it could really use a couple more songs like Montezuma. Oh, and I'm not really sure how The Cascades works (interlude? short instrumental?) but it's among the best tracks in here and underrated as hell.

I really didn't like this much at all when it came out, but my taste has progressed intensely over the past couple years and I really enjoy this album a lot now. I prefer Bon Iver (I always seem to pair them together), but Fleet Foxes is pretty dang good too.

It hurts my soul to see you lump Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes together, but I guess in some way I can see why you would do that.
