Whenever your down, when ever your gloomy, when ever you feel like crying your guts out, what albums do you listen to to brighten up your spirits? What albums bring out the Jimmy Dean sun in you?

I'd have to go with Rumours, Hysteria, and anything good by Kansas. In fact, i'm listening to Overture right now.

There ... there are uplifting albums?

Also why do you find Rumours uplifting? Not disagreeing (I mean I do but you can feel whatever the hell you want, I don't care), I'd just like to understand.

And to actually answer the question, I usually let myself just cry it out. The Smiths, Bon Iver, Joy Division, Radiohead, Jose Gonzalez, Bright Eyes, etc.

If I'm angry for some reason about whatever makes me sad, then add in Nirvana and Blue October and AWOLNation and a few others. Does that count?

I guess I have a "Calm down after a bad one" playlist, not uplifting but calming. That'd be anything by Jake Shimabukuro, Best Of by Boo Radleys, some Joy Zipper, Atlas Genius' album I can't remember the name, The Safety Not Guarenteed Soundtrack, You Can't Die In The Living Room by Photographers, 1st Day In by Charlie Nobles.

Mostly I guess I go to You Can't Die In The Living Room, 1st Day In, and Atlas Genius. Not uplifting per say but relaxing, a little pain numbing, and a mind changer.

OK, this was not the answer I was hoping for. If it surprises you then...

there are uplifting albums! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Rumours: Many songs bring happiness and joy to me, like Don't Stop which is the most uplifting song I've ever heard, and the whole combination of genres and the instruments get me fired up.

Kansas because they usually have very morale messages and the lyrics are beautiful.

Hysteria does the job because of songs like Pour Some Sugar On me which is my second favorite song, Excitable, Rocket which is so much fun, Armageddon it, Run Riot, Don't Shoot Shotgun, and Animal which makes me wanna muuv ma' bah-day!

Souvlaki by Slowdive for sure. Some sort of weird purgatory where bliss and despair intermingle and get really confused as to who is who. O_O Either way, I usually end up better for listening to it...
I think pretty much all music that I like works to do this for me to an extent...Something I often look for in music is comfort, which is a form of uplifting-ness-ness. Even albums that seem bleak are uplifting. I don't know, music in general just brings you to a higher state...Where only the music matters and it transcends everything else...So, in a way, you could say that all good music is uplifting. Very Happy

I totally get this. I consider I Could Live in Hope by Low uplifting (cleansing, you could say, makes you feel rejuvenated and ready to live life).

My "calm down, Ryan. It will be okay" album is definitely Ambient 1: Music for Airports. Something about that album makes me feel, like whole or understood or something.

Also, any Tallest Man On Earth. That man has a very powerful, hopeful and spiritual affect on me.

A lot of the time when I'm sad I find melancholy music very uplifting and happy music very alienating. For some people it's the exact opposite. But when I'm just feeling apathetic, these artists are always there to inject the life back into me: Owen Pallett, LCD Soundsystem, Janelle Monae, The Avalanches, The Books, Arvo Part, Bat For Lashes, Chairlift, Deerhoof, Stereolab...

Actually come to think of it, nearly every artist I listen to I find uplifting in some way. Very different ways though.
