Hey everyone. I'm Ava and I'd like to start a music diary. I claim to love almost all music and especially classic rock, but the only artists I'm highly familiar with are David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and the Beatles. Currently I'm working on Led Zeppelin. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to go from here? I'll listen to recommendations and post reviews below. I'd really appreciate some help!

If classic rock is what you want to explore, I suggest surfing through Rolling Stone mag's top 500 albums. Letting us know what you like from Pink Floyd, Bowie, and Beatles will also help out. I'm guessing Bowie is Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, etc., if so then I might point you towards T. Rex's Electric Warrior, Ozzy Osbourne's Randy Rhoads albums, and New York Dolls' s/t.

Hi Ava, here's some suggestions:

For each, you may want to try albums such as the following (some are more direct descendants than others). I listed them under each artist in approximate order of how closely related they are (top being the closest)... There are definitely more possible examples for each, but I felt this was plenty, and I also tried not to stray too far towards the dis-related side of the coin (I may have stretched it a bit on some).

The Beatles
-Stands for Decibels - The DBs
-White Soul - Green
-Skylarking - XTC
-Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
-Bellybutton - Jellyfish
-Murmur - R.E.M
-The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
-Forever Changes - Love
-Deserter's Songs - Mercury Rev
-Picaresque - Decemberists
-In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
-Piper at the Gates of Dawn - Pink Floyd

David Bowie
-Roxy Music - Roxy Music
-Another Green World - Brian Eno
-Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy - Brian Eno
-Before and After Science - Brian Eno
-For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
-Stranded - Roxy Music
-New York Dolls - New York Dolls

Pink Floyd:
-OK Computer - Radiohead
-Kid A - Radiohead
-Amnesiac - Radiohead
-Agaetis Byrjun - Sigur Ros
-Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk
-Laughing Stock - Talk Talk
-Hex - Bark Psychosis
-Faust IV - Faust
-In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson

Led Zeppelin
-Who's Next - The Who
-Superunknown - Soundgarden
-Elephant - The White Stripes
-Disraeli Gears - Cream
-Wheels Of Fire - Cream
-Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones
-White Blood Cells - The White Stripes
-Are You Experienced? - Jimi Hendrix
-Exile on Main Street - The Rolling Stones
-Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix
-Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses

If you like David Bowie, you might like Beck
My favorite album: (although it is an album about a breakup)

Sea Change by Beck

Guero by Beck

If you like Pink Floyd, I agree with what's been said, and you'll probably like Radiohead
Favorite Albums:

Kid A by Radiohead

In Rainbows by Radiohead

If you like the Beatles, you might like this album by Simon and Garfunkel:

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme by Si... Garfunkel

And lastly, if you like Led Zeppelin (I-IV are probably their best, imo), I'd check out Rolling Stones as another band with roots in blues rock (although different for sure).

Hot Rocks 1964–1971 by The Rolling Stones

Exile On Main St. by The Rolling Stones

Some Girls by The Rolling Stones

Lastly it has been joked that Black Sabbath is Led Zeppelin's ugly cousin, so this is worth a spin:

Paranoid by Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath

As for discovering new music, sometimes it helps to listen to a record a couple times, shelve it, and then come back a bit later, if after some time you still don't like it, at least you experienced it. I say this cause sometimes I'll listen to a record for the first time and it has interesting elements, but I'm not emotionally invested. After a few listens though, sometimes that changes and I begin to like an album that I didn't like before. Sometimes these growers are the best ones.

Also something to note is to help identify why you listen to music. Some people listen to music for only emotional reasons (lyrics don't matter, it's the feel), some for only intellectual reasons (only lyrics/ideas/fashion/music theory, etc. matters... emotional experience is less important). For me I find something in between - something that tickles my brain, but also emotionally captivates me. You might find totally other reasons that are important to you.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think I'll choose one from the first person's recommendations, then one from the next person's, and so on, and cycle through them that way.

You're right about the Bowie - my favorite albums range from Space Oddity to Scary Monsters. For Pink Floyd, of course my favorite albums are from DSOTM to The Wall, but I like Piper and the singles with Syd as well, and Syd's solo work. (Not to say that there aren't gems from SOS - Obscured by Clouds. Particularly Ricks's and Gilmour's stuff. Fat Old Sun, Cymbaline, Summer '68, Paintbox.) And Beatles, well, all of it. Least favorite is probably Help!.
