Haha! Thank you! This is just about as good a birthday aotd as I can ask for. It's no secret I adore the passion and feel or cadence of this album to its core. Something about it, like the acoustic half is so tender and personal feeling. The songwriting is excellent throughout. I know you seems to indicate the lyrics in some parts were "cringeworthy" or some souch thing (maybe not the word you used but you know what I mean.) but to me songs like "Powderfinger", the 2 "Hey Hey, My My" songs, and ESPECIALLY "Thrasher" are completely gripping. Yeah, I think tht is the right word, they're totally gripping to me. Especially on the first side there are few album sides that can maintain such a total transfixed attention on the words. It's amazing to me. Time sort of warps and I feel like I'm there in '79 with Neil whenever I hear "Thrasher" and "Pocahontas" and "Sail Away" and everything else on side 1. Side 2 is no slouch either, I love how ragged and rugged it feels. I'm not as big on "Sedan Delivery" and "Welfare Mothers", but that is only in comparison to the incomparable first 6 or so songs. It's still fabulous and fun and LOUD and sort of liberating. It just feels like Neil and the boys are letting lose.
As far as guitar parts, the acoustic playing is so earthy and lovely and natural to me. Feels like just a very warm moment musically. And the electric playing, especially the leads and explosive parts of "Powderfinger" and "Hey Hey My My Into The Black" is awesome! Like, really, it sounds like pure passion.
Yeah, this is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard EASILY. Highly recommended to anyone who hasn't heard it yet. _________________ -Ryan

Part of the 4 or 5 upper echelon Neil Young albums. I'm not as big on the pub rockers as the slower numbers, but it's still pretty solid throughout, including some of his best lyrics (imo). I see it as two separate performances, with the first half being a tribute to his previous successes and the second an homage to the contemporary punk scene.
Great artists are always battling, as rust never sleeps.

Seems right after the Let's Rank.
I totally agree with Mercury on the first part: it's nothing particularly new in Neil's discography but those melodies with that guitar.. There's something very emotional there. But I'm not very big on the second half, it feels a bit too much "epic" to me. Maybe "epic" is not the right word, but I hope you get what I mean. It's still an excellent album. But we're talking about Neil.

"It's Better to burn out than to fade away" is my favorite song lyric. It's just one of those lines that holds a truly universal power to it. Overall, excellent record, one of his best and on the right day my favorite.

Is it possible for an album to be both a studio album and a live album at the same time?

Yes it is.
After re-listening to the Neil Young catalogue last week, this album moved up several places on my Neil Young album ranking. It's just below After The Gold Rush (imo). I had forgotten how good and powerful this album is. Moving from the acoustic songs to the electric songs is quite a jolt which is a good thing for this album and makes it all that much more powerful.
Powderfinger is such a great song.
