If this were around the time of The Shepard's Dog release my opinion might be a little different (though Holter obv didn't have an album out yet), but while I loved Creek and Shepard's Dog not much else has clicked and his past albums felt either directionless or trite. With just three releases though Julia Holter has improved beautifully with each album, and Loud City Song is something truly special. Since this is 2014, not 2007, Im going with Holter without hesitation.
This one is difficult for me, because I enjoy listening to Iron & Wine more, but I think Julia Holter would deserve to move to the next level more than Iron & Wine.
Sam Beam's music is beautiful, the perfect accompaniment for relaxing in any way. Sure he doesn't set the world on fire with inventiveness, but that's not his intention. He's simply in the business of writing the greatest indie folk known to man. Just kick back and enjoy it.
And while I do agree that his last two albums may have been small steps back, where can you really go when you've achieved perfection 3 times over?
