Talking about music with other educated musicheads is very cool, but I still mourn the passing of interesting, varied, music-based print media. It helped shape a lot of my formative listening, and even now I still check in with my favourite music writers on a semi-frequent basis. You don't have to agree with criticism to find it enlightening. When I started listening to music heavily, I relied on writers I liked to point me in the right directions, because the internet wasn't the easy-access encyclopedia it is today and streaming wasn't a thing. (I used to spend all my pocket money on albums - on CD - which I'd read about, which would've been an expensive crapshoot if not for certain magazines.) I still see music criticism as an often worthwhile and sometimes thrilling artform in its own right.

Beautifully said, man.

Idk I get some "medieval folk vibes" from Fleet Foxes too, especially this album. I guess it could sound like bland, inoffensive folk/indie if you dislike it, but I don't get that vibe. There's a lot of emotions in their performances imo. Especially on Helplessness Blues. And on the last 2, they pushed their sound in different directions, and the songwriting is pretty consistently good. But I do admit that I must be in "the mood" to listen to a Fleet Foxes album. For example, we were camping a few weeks ago and playing Shore a day after it dropped and it was so fitting. And for some reason I always play Helplessness Blues around Christmas, idk why. In those moments I feel that I have to have a Fleet Foxes album in my top 100.

i don't even dislike fleet foxes

but i'm still adamant on calling it similar to any bardic/medieval folk stuff is a huge reach and for someone who has listened to a LOT of neo-medieval folk music etc. (i'm white shut up) i can say ppl who say it are wrong

Mintrels are pretty medieval. I admit that I havem't heard a lot of "neo-medieval folk" but I think it's a justified connection at the least. It was a poor choice of words but I think the connection is relevant.

Because it's only possible to make that assumption through the cover-art. I guess that means every other power metal album should be medieval.

Wasn't talking about you specifically though. Bad wording on my part. But having a "medieval folk vibe" and actually being in that genre is quite different if you ask me. Maybe a better phrase would be "medieval pastoral vibe". Or not. Don't care about the semantics.

if you think fleet foxes sounds like anything medieval, you have no knowledge of what medieval folk music sounds like
