Yeah, I consider For Sale the least accomplished release from the four. It's almost as if they took a backward step after A Hard Day's Night by resorting back to old standards in the form of covers in order to release a second album before 1964 had had its day.

"The Machines of God" is definitely a massive blemish on the legacy of the original lineup Pumpkins. Five phenomenal records (Gish, SD, Piscies, MCIS, Adore) followed by a "meh at best" one.

Bollocks is it. You mean this surely?

Danse Manatee by Avey Tare, Panda Bear & Geologist

As for other 'offenders':

Tarantula by Ride

Love Kraft by Super Furry Animals

And of course this 'gem' from the Fall...

Steely Dan's Everything Must Go

It's not Terrible, but even Two Against Nature had 5 or 6 fairly engaging songs... and neither of their two recent albums hold a candle to anything they did before (yes, including Gaucho.)

Gotta bring this post back up to mention this one

The Life Pursuit by Belle & Sebastian

I love all of Belle & Sebastian's albums, yet I can hardly even get through this album. There are a few good singles-quality songs, but to me the rest is just bland.

For me their last great album was Arab Strap,Fold your hands was alright but from Storytelling onwards, like you said had few quality Singles(or potential) but as albums they don't quite work.
