Skinny wrote: | Eh, I think 'Automatic' is a far better song than 'Darling Nikki', which is the weakest moment on Purple Rain. I don't think 1999 is even a particularly sex-obsessed album, at least compared to Dirty Mind (which is actually my favourite Prince album, hey ho). I think the argument that Purple Rain is somehow deeper than 1999 is absurd, but whatever floats your boat. There's virtually nothing to separate them in terms of quality, and they tread extremely similar themes lyrically. I'm not entirely sure how you've managed to convince yourself that one is much more worthwhile than the other. I can understand the complaint about length, but I guess that comes down to how high your tolerance level is for extended synth-funk jams. What I cannot fathom is the idea that lyrically 1999 is considerably weaker than Purple Rain, especially when the themes explored on each are identical. |
As I noted before, Purple Rain's songs explore similarly sexual themes as 1999, but with a more personal perspective, in my opinion. "Darling Nikki" brilliantly describes why Prince's encounter with a prostitute is so riveting, opening with a scene of innocent curiosity but then slowly luring the listener into the confusion and euphoria as it continues. The lyrics are already quite vivid, but the shifts in the instrumentation emphasize the story even more intensely. Besides all of that, the track just has an really inventive melodic structure, like everything else on Purple Rain. "Automatic" concentrates strictly on the sex and thus feels far more alienated from someone who isn't already making out with somebody. The motivations that drive the narratives of "Darling Nikki," "Take Me With U," "The Beautiful Ones," and other songs on Purple Rain are more ubiquitous than the sex jams on 1999 like "Automatic" because they represent more directly the thoughts surrounding the scene and not just the impulses. The rest of 1999 mostly isn't as racy as "Automatic," but aside from the first three songs, its musical developments aren't nearly as involved as what you find on Purple Rain.
By the way, my favorite song off Purple Rain is the title track, even though it's over eight minutes long. The length works on that number because of its steady, dreamy atmosphere that very gradually sheds its layers in anticipation over the course of time. I don't enjoy this surplus length on straightforward dance tracks like the bulk of 1999 because it usually doesn't feel as much like the music is approaching anything like the song "Purple Rain" does; the album's length instead feels as though it's intended to keep people dancing for a longer period of time, even if they aren't paying as much attention to the music. Good lyrics can easily lose their luster if they aren't paced appropriately, and that's a definite weakness of 1999's, even on songs other than "Automatic." It would be understandable if there were only about one or two super-long numbers on the album, but having this approach dominate almost the entire record just feels like overkill. The Purple Rain soundtrack isn't any less fun to play at a party or club, but strictly as something you try to take in completely, it's both more balanced and colorful than 1999, imo.

#2 When You Were Mine (off "Dirty Mind")
#3 Strange Relationship (off "Sign O The Times")
#4 Delirious (off "1999")
#5 1999 (off "1999")

#7 Little Red Corvette (off "1999")
#8 Kiss (off "Parade")
#9 The Cross (off "Sign O The Times")

Yeah I recently decided Sign O The Times may be my fave album. It's just amazing. Also 1999's first side is about as perfect as music gets. _________________ -Ryan
