If I estimate that "adore" crystallizes at about 7.3 and above on my ratings, then I suppose the following meet this thread's lame-factor the best...
8.5/10: The River - Bruce Springsteen (1980)
8.4/10: Original Sin - Pandora's Box (1989) ...greatest completely guilty pleasure (start-to-finish) of all time?
8.1/10: Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette (1995)
8.1/10: Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses (1988)
7.7/10: Watermark - Enya (1988)
Not sure if these should be included, but just in case Im just too out of the loop...
9.2/10: The Doors - The Doors (1966)
8.6/10: Slow, Deep & Hard - Type O Negative (1991) ...outrageously misogynist, despicable, possible allusions to Nazism. Yea, pretty lame, especially within the context of today's culture/political correctness (not that Nazi's would ever be cool in any other time). However, it may (to some degree) get a pass from this list because of that outrageousness and how blackly comic it is, however ambiguous that may be crossed with its ferocity and hyper-realism.
7.8/10: Strange Days - The Doors (1968)
7.8/10: Images and Words - Dream Theater (1992)
7.5/10: Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails (1989)
7.3/10: Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys (1966) ... Maybe, maybe not? But that f-ing album cover...
7.3/10: The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle - Bruce Springsteen (1973) |
Somehow I missed Jagged Little Pill with such a high rating.
The only lame album on here is Appetite For Destruction... hehe.
I haven't heard Type O Negative... sounds more offensive than uncool, but I guess offensive can be uncool too and that flavor of offensive sounds like the uncool side.
Also The Doors is probably the coolest on there... I think The Doors are definitely on the cool side of the street. |
We all know you're a closet Appetite fanboy
Slow Deep Hard: Yes, very offensive ... but backed by extraordinary technical, compositional prowess and extreme vigor, emotional purpose ... so does that justify? Perhaps...
Agreed on The Doors. Personally don't know why they seem to show up on threads like this every time but they do... Even if one thinks they're kinda lame, surely there are much more relevant picks if looking at all eras? _________________ Best Classical

Maybe someone else can answer. My selections didn't mean I think so, just that they're somewhat common picks on threads like this. _________________ Best Classical

Not sure I understand The Doors being lame, but you're obviously not alone...
It's hard to be more 'cool' (at least the anarchic, daring, sex-symbol, Rock front man version of it) than Jim Morrison was in the 60s. I suppose people might just think they're pretentious with songs like The End, but personally, I generally avoid that descriptor as a criticism, as one would have to dismiss too much art. It's practically par for the course and is really only a sin when it is not backed by enough purpose and emotional engagement from the artist(s). Often it's almost a synonym for "ambitious" anyway, or at least that's how it's commonly used. _________________ Best Classical

If we get really deep into dank metal state of mind, than 80% of metal that yall listen to is whack. And about a quarter of what I listen to. And Typo O Negative is still cool under these strict regulations. _________________ Overall chart

I like this definition. For me, McDonald's fries are a guilty pleasure. I know they're bad for me. I know they're bad for the planet. I know that the employees there get treated like shit. But god damn do I enjoy eating these every once in a while.
It's a bit hard to think of any music in the same way as McDonald's fries. Listening to the Bee Gees isn't hurting yourself or anyone else (although there are certainly musicians who as Applerill says are harmful to endorse).
So yeah, while "lame" may be harder to define (although fortunately we have Skinny here to erase all doubt haha), I think it's a better topic of discussion than "guilty pleasures". _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Also never heard of Type O Negative before this thread but this description REALLY makes me want to listen, I'll give it a shot. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

I dunno, I just feel like all the people I've met IRL who love The Doors are lame, ergo The Doors themselves are lame. I really like their debut album, but they're lame. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
