SHIT YEAH!!! This was the first Built to Spill album I ever heard. More importantly, this is one of the first albums I dug into in my musical self-education. Such an untouchably great album. Love it to death.
BtS are my favorite 90s' band (or at least tied with Portishead and Mobb Deep), and this is their best on par with the follow-up. I mean, both have spent almost equal amounts of time in my top 10. And There's Nothing Wrong With Love is really mediocre. Their debut would have made a much better trilogy.
But yeah, the guitar here is incredible, I agree the pop elements aren't perfect, but it's made up by the atmosphere I think. There's something really desperate and human about this album. Heartwarming.
As other have mentioned the "trilogy" is good.Debut is interesting enough sounds like early Pavement outtakes/b sides. However i find albums after Keep It Like a Secret to be boring.
BTS is a favorite, but this album could be much better without all the excess. Keep it like a secret is my favorite album by them (it used to There's nothing wrong with love, but that one has the same problem as this one; it contains excess, but Car is the best "single" ever released ).
Built to Spill at their creative peak, one of the best albums of the 1990's from any genre of music. I much prefer the long hypnotic guitar driven jams on this than the (short) song oriented follow up, Keep It Like a Secret.
Perfect example of why this album is so great, seamless mood/musical transitions within the songs.
