Always heard incredible things about the Pogues, but never checked them out. Is this where I should start?

Either this, or my personal preference is:

If I Should Fall From Grace With God by The Pogues

A band so good we gave them a holiday

The best song is the Fairytale In New York one. I sing that when it is Christmas time. It's not on this album however... Sad

I also prefer If I Should Fall From Grace With God. This is a pretty good one too. Kind of groundbreaking in terms of popularizing celtic punk and paving the way for the likes of Flogging Molly, The dropkick Murphys and The Real Mackenzies. Good, bawdy fun.

One of my top 10 albums of all time, absolutely adore it, though I regard the first 3 Pogues albums as near perfect (If I Should Fall From Grace With God and Red Roses For Me being the other 2), MacGowan was at his peak for those 3 albums. I always felt that If I Should Fall From Grace With God was the more polished and perfected one, while Red Roses For Me had a more raw style to it, with Rum, Sodomy & The Lash kind of fitting in between both and doing so perfectly.

I feel this is their best. But their opening period is just amazing! And the song "Dirty Old Town" is one of the greatest songs ever in my opinion. That's the song that got me into Pogues initially.

Funny, I just listened to this the other day.

Yes. If I Should Fall... is pretty good, too, but doesn't quite capture their essence or w/e as well in my opinion. This one feels a lot more raw, which is the sound I tend to associate with them. I also just like this one a lot more.

Anyway, it's brilliant obv. It's alternately fun, catchy, sad, and uplifting, often all at once. If you don't tear up listening to "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" then I'm afraid you're probably not listening to it right. The same is true if you can sit still in your chair listening to the likes of "Sick Bed of Cuchulainn" or "Sally MacLennane". Just great stuff all around.

Best Pogues record, and vastly better than If I Should Fall on a account of Steve Lillywhite being the ultimate 80s saboteur.
