I remember the first time I heard Nirvana. It was after taping SLTS off the 1991 charts presented by Mark Goodier. Nearly 25 years later and it's still a game changer, even if you've heard it umpteen times. Listen to it again. Like, now. Oh go on.
...and from the Jesus and Mary Chain drummer we have...
I saw Bobby Gillespie once at the Royal Albert Hall after a Spiritualized gig. He was off his box. Higher Than The Sun, in fact. More anecdotes available on request.
Further proof that 1991 inspires more BEA user names than all other years combined...
2006 has easily my favourite album of the lot, Fishscale, and a couple of other albums I really like (Silent Shout and The Crane Wife), plus it has arguably the strongest singles selection so far in the tournament. 1991's singles selection is nowhere near as good, but I probably have more love (cumulatively) for I Wish My Brother George Was Here / Nevermind / Laughing Stock than I do for those three aforementioned from 2006. Still one album on each team that I haven't heard, so I'll wait to see what they're like before I make my decision, but I'm leaning very slightly towards 2006 for Fishscale and those singles. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Going to have to give that Värttinä album a listen. But, unless it's so overwhelmingly bad that it actually negates from the 91' team, I'm going to have to go with that year. 2006 is still excellent though... it's hard to vote against Destroyer and Ghostface. _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
