JiMmY's 1991 MaNiFeStO, pt.3 (sponsored by 'don't fuck with the formula productions')

The Obligatory Vote-Grabber

Nevermind by Nirvana

I remember the first time I heard Nirvana. It was after taping SLTS off the 1991 charts presented by Mark Goodier. Nearly 25 years later and it's still a game changer, even if you've heard it umpteen times. Listen to it again. Like, now. Oh go on.

...and from the Jesus and Mary Chain drummer we have...

Primal Scream - Higher Than The Sun

Link

I saw Bobby Gillespie once at the Royal Albert Hall after a Spiritualized gig. He was off his box. Higher Than The Sun, in fact. More anecdotes available on request.

Further proof that 1991 inspires more BEA user names than all other years combined...

Yerself Is Steam by Mercury Rev

Happy psychedelic fuzz always rang more true with me than Right Said Fred...

Post-Rock Paradise, pt.2

Laughing Stock by Talk Talk

Part 2 in Talk Talk's move into soundscapes well beyond the realms of TOTP and The Chart Show

The 'Who Left The Guitars At Home?' Pick

I Wish My Brother George Was Here by De...Homosapien

It is time to get, it is time to get funkee (in a hip-hop stylee)

Last Orders?

Oi Dai by Värttinä

Finnish folk = 1991's secret weapon, with all the stealth of Kimi Raikkonen. Listen to this fucking album and it'll blow your long johns off. KIPPIS!

4 MORE SINGLES-2-GO-GO

My Bloody Valentine - Swallow (from the Tremelo EP)

Link

Teenage Fanclub - Star Sign

Link

Lush - For Love

Link

The Prodigy - Charly

Sounds like something a child abusing Nazi war criminal in hiding would say.

2006 has easily my favourite album of the lot, Fishscale, and a couple of other albums I really like (Silent Shout and The Crane Wife), plus it has arguably the strongest singles selection so far in the tournament. 1991's singles selection is nowhere near as good, but I probably have more love (cumulatively) for I Wish My Brother George Was Here / Nevermind / Laughing Stock than I do for those three aforementioned from 2006. Still one album on each team that I haven't heard, so I'll wait to see what they're like before I make my decision, but I'm leaning very slightly towards 2006 for Fishscale and those singles.

Going to have to give that Värttinä album a listen. But, unless it's so overwhelmingly bad that it actually negates from the 91' team, I'm going to have to go with that year. 2006 is still excellent though... it's hard to vote against Destroyer and Ghostface.
