So this was what I posted right after graduating high school. I was Cap'n Vanilla, but hey it's all good music, so w/e. kind of funny that arcade fire was number one for the 10's based on the suburbs alone... must have really not delved at all yet (not that reflektor would have helped )
Now the list would be...
60's: The Beach Boys
70's: Brian Eno
80's: Kate Bush
90's: Guided by Voices
00's: Joanna Newsom
10's: Julia Holter _________________ My top songs of the 2010s

ooooh i love when we re-open old questions. This one is tough. I really have a clear cut obvious number one for a couple, but otherwise I'm torn on my absolute favorite or defining artist for a decade (based off what I love and listen to, not in any kind of official rock mag conceptualizing or generalizing way). I guess I am looking for consistent high quality albums and songs but if an artist releases 2 or even 1 ABSOLUTELY SMASHING record i may be willing to just say "fuck it" and put 'em at the top. For me it goes, after WAY WAAY too much careful consideration, like this...
TEN DECADES of RYAN FAVORITES
20s - Blind Lemon Jefferson comfortably. Then Blind Willie Johnson (his records are pretty evenly split 'tween decades otherwise he'd be number one here), then maybe Tommy Johnson, followed by Mississippi John Hurt (his avalon records were pretty amazing)
30s - Robert Johnson. This may be a pretty cliche pick, but DAMN he was a GOD. Followed by Blind Willie McTell. Both are the crowning legends of their respective blues regions imo (maybe Blind Boy Fuller would have something to say about that).
40s - Rev. Gary Davis. Maybe next is Woody Guthrie. IDK. I couldn't think of anyone I consider a no brainer for the 40s.
50s - MILES DAVIS. No competition. I just love his stuff so much. He woulda been number one for 60s too if not for my fave artist and the only one I can totally and unequivocally say I love more than Miles.
60s - BOB DYLAN. The G.O.A.T. Then Miles Davis. Then Coltrane. Then Velvet Underground, Stones,, Beatles, are all about equal. Pretty cliche all around. But seriously Dylan and Davis absolutely rule my taste for that decade.
70s - Neil Young I think is my number One. But maybe Dylan is a more my thing that decade. Pretty even. then its Patti Smith, or Fela or Eno or Sly or Gaye...
80s - PRINCE. Followed by Tom Waits. 3rd is probably The Replacements or Kate Bush.
90s - Pavement and Gang Starr are pretty even here. So that is a duel win. Followed in 3rd by Lucinda Williams. All things Pharaoh Monch affiliated, and all things Wilco and Waits was pretty much amazing that decade as well.
00s - Strokes. Was tough but damn their first 2 albums are so fucking amazing I had to go with 'em. No one I consider really dominated the decade for me that I just loved all they released. Radiohead is probably my number 2. Maybe Wilco had a great run, so did Waits (again) so they tie for 3rd.
10s - Tallest Man On Earth . Wasn't close for me. But Kendrick Lamar is so far ahead of everyone below him at number 2. This is like the most obvious 1-2 for me. I absolutely am thankfully for both these men. Adore them. Jason Isbell and Vampire Weekend are my 3 and 4. _________________ -Ryan
