I'm thinking of getting my dad some albums that he hasn't heard or perhaps bands he's never heard from his era. He loves thin lizzy, Boston, eagles, Queen, the who etc not sure about zep or sabbath but I'd like to know what you think are some of the best rock albums of that decade that may fit into that category.

Is it solipsistic in here or is it just me?

Weeeeeellllllll I don't know how obscure you're looking to go, so there are the obvious dadrocker classics:

The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And...avid Bowie

Machine Head by Deep Purple

Abraxas by Santana

After The Gold Rush by Neil Young

The Grand Illusion by Styx

Chicago by Chicago

Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band

Morrison Hotel by The Doors

But if you want something more obscure(ish) I can do that too

A little more obscure perhaps. He likes a lot of power chords/riffs. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Cool. I second the Captain Beyond suggestion.

There's also these:

I know this is The Who, but I've always thought it was a criminally underrated album

The Who By Numbers by The Who

Kingdom Come by Sir Lord Baltimore

This might be a bit bluesier than you're looking for but it's great:

Roy Buchanan by Roy Buchanan

Demons & Wizards by Uriah Heep

Blue Öyster Cult by Blue Öyster Cult

Tyranny And Mutation by Blue Öyster Cult

Stampede by The Doobie Brothers

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow by Rainbow

Fighting by Thin Lizzy

And if he likes Thin Lizzy and hasn't heard this, get it now:

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy

Not exactly my strongest area (I'm far too hip for that), buuuuut these are pretty neat

Distortions by Blue Phantom

Lord Of The Rings by Bo Hansson

This Heat by This Heat

Som by Persona

Overkill by Motörhead

Reflections On The Future by Twenty Sixty Six and Then

couple of those probably fall more under the category of psychedelic but it's usually at least "heavy psych" or sth
