Really? Norman plugging Ugetsu is how I first was introduced to Mizoguchi.

Same here. I recall the second best ever movies redux thing that Norman was pointing out that the wrong Japanese legend was getting all the love.

Anyway, I'm enjoying these lists. I'm working away on my list. Editing and re-editing etc. I hope to show what I've got soon.

I'm genuinely surprised, unless you had me rooting for Hitchcock, which I would understand - visually at least. Ugetsu is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Indeed. Perhaps clearly topped by only Plan 9. But it's close. I'm tempted to give an applerill-esque review of it right here and now. But that impulse passed.

Actually, no. I figured you'd put Touch of Evil at #1 (which is your #2, so whatever). I remember you praising it a while back, but I can't remember where... might have been the 'all-time' poll Nutso did. All in all it doesn't matter, I was just commenting Razz

And as much as I love to see all the Ophuls film's on your list, I'm surprised to see no Malle. Not a fan of Elevator To The Gallows or The Lovers?

Not at all. Elevator is mainly worthy for its soundtrack, but it's always looked like a very shallow, superficial movie to me. The Lovers' shock value was outmoded by a solid 20 years at least when I first saw the movie... The only Malle movies I like are Le feu follet and Lacombe Lucien.

Loving the showing The Seventh Seal has made thusfar. I've seen a lot of people on the internet who don't consider it top tier Bergman (perhaps due to it being his most famous film while not being the technical marvel that Wild Strawberries and Persona are - thematically it's as good as anything he's done and that's saying a lot). Still working on my list but it'll no doubt make my top 5 as well.

@Mostlymor - awesome list, but question: are you ranking them based off how much you like each individual film or just placing all the films of a director next to each other? I ask cuz that may slightly affect point distribution on the poll. Just curious...??
