- Post subject: Greatest Tarkovsky film poll/discussion
|
I just recently ordered a 9 disc set of all Tarkovsky's works and I've finally been able to dive into his short yet meticulous and legendary filmography. He truly was a genius in so many ways.
I'm gonna post a poll as to what all of you who've seen some of his movies consider his crowning achievement, his masterpiece if you will. But along with voting feel free to give your thoughts on why a film is to you the best, and so forth.
In the poll I didn't include his early short films. I only included the 7 full length features. _________________ -Ryan

I voted Stalker, but this is an incredibly difficult poll.
I also have the anthology box set and have watched the movies several times.
Each film is so beautifully shot, you could select any frame shot to answer the poll.
Stalker is a wonderful existential movie and the one I usually prefer watching, but I also have a soft spot for Ivan. Oh and Mirror is pure genius See, this isn't going very far.
The very first film I saw was Solaris ... and I fell asleep. It actually put me off other Tarkovsky movies for some time. What a fool. Thankfully I was able to see it again in theaters a few years later, and fell in love. _________________ I'll be your plastic toy.

I saw Solaris and thought it was incredibly beautiful and sensitive!! I'm not predisposed to sci-fi since it seems more about abstract ideas than actual humanity but Solaris was like the opposite of that. The cinematography was beautiful too. It was my first and so far my only Tarkovsky. Will report back after I've seen more.

I have a feeling you'll really get a kick out of The Mirror. It's so tender and beautiful. _________________ -Ryan

Mirror is my favorite Tarkovsky and also my favorite film of all time. It's pure poetry. Scarcely does art make me feel so intimately familiar with and connected to the artist behind it while still being totally immersed in the world of the art itself. It reminds me that I am alive and that I am sharing this experience with a whole universe like nothing else does

The number 1 slot is an impossible tie between Stalker, the Mirror, and the Sacrifice for me. I finally went for Mirror on the poll, possibly a subconscious move to win brownie points with DBZ.
Ah heck, I'm just gonna rank them.
1. Stalker / Mirror / Sacrifice
2. Solaris
3. Nostalghia
4. Andrei Rublev
5. Ivan's Childhood
I think Nostalghia is grossly underrated. In an average discussion of Tarkovsky, it is the only film which I have never seen brought up, even once.

Nostalghia is his greatest, most profound film imo, though they're all exceptional.
1) Nostalghia
2) Mirror
3) Stalker
4) The Sacrifice
5) Andrei Rublev
6) Solaris
7) Ivan's Childhood
I'm quite certain about that order, except for Andrei Rublev, which could be as high as #3.

They're pretty much all perfect. But by personal preference I'd actually say it's between Andrei Rublev and Stalker, with Mirror coming in third and then no idea how I'd rank the rest aside from Ivan's Childhood probably being last although I still love it.
[Edit] After I voted Rublev the results perfectly mirrored what I just said, no pun intended.

I voted for Stalker. I have recently discovered the genius of Tarkovsky. I bought Solaris on Blu ray and watched it five nights in a row, I've never done that before. That gave me a reason to delve deeper into his movies and so I went for Stalker. Oops I did it again, I watched it five nights in a row. I believe Stalker is even better than Solaris. There are so many layers to the film. What is the zone? My first reaction was that it was a metaphor for a 'capitalist utopia' and the 'negative' ending was the reason the Soviet authorities allowed a release. I don't know, was the communist regime still that concerned about it in 1979? Since then I have changed my mind with every viewing. It's open to so many interpretations. Is the black and white/colour segments some sort of Wizard of Oz homage, although the same effect was used in Solaris. What's with the crown of thorns? What does the final scene mean? Was the raining in the room another connection to Solaris? Stalker has a great feel to it. Overall it has that same hypnotic quality as Solaris does. It moves slowly but surely. The zone apparently grants you your innermost wish, but nobody gets what they came for. It's a brilliant movie. I can't wait to watch it again.
