Some absolutely fantastic stuff and then some mediocre stuff. Yet to really take off for one of my favorite artists.

80/100

Totally dispute this. This is my favourite S&G LP, and in fact to me the best thing Paul Simon ever did. A huge progression on from Wednesday Morning, 3AM and devoid of the folk-lite sentimental fodder that the world and his mother unwittingly lapped up when they all bought copies of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Moored in Simon's times doing the UK folk circuit ("Anji" - his cover of the Davy Graham-via-Bert Jansch instrumental - opened a hell of a lot of doors for me), Sounds Of Silence sounds authentic, texturally rich, and rocks and jangles in equal measure. "Blessed" is the only wrong step if you ask me.

This and Bookends are pretty much all the S&G anyone needs if you ask me...

Hmm... to each their own.

I think you completely gapped S&G's best album Parsely Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. I agree with Bookends. This record has a few bad steps, few mediocre songs, and a few absolutely fantastic tracks. It's a bit of a mixed bag for me.

Also there's probably 4 solo albums I dig over this one, again, my opinion and that is yours.

Great album from one of my all-time favorite artists.

seth, I agree PSR&T is their best album, but Sounds of Silence was them taking off. It's a huge leap over their mediocre debut album. What tracks don't you like from this album?

Totally agree it was taking them off - that's what I was saying (but now I realize I said it wrong). What I was meant was they were starting, but totally didn't reach flight.

For me musically these are interesting, but lyrically/vocally are pretty mediocre (gave them a 70)
A Most Peculiar Man
April Come She Will
Blessed

Hated - gave it a 60
We've Got a Groovy Thing Goin'

The rest I was giving an 80 and above:

Sound of Silence: 100
Leaves that are green: 85
Kathy's Song: 100
Somewhere they can't find me: 80
Anji: 80
Richard Cory: 80
I Am A Rock: 100

By the way I do find it funny we always seem to pit great artists' albums' against each other. But I suppose that kind of is what brought us to a site like this... kinda.

So I don't know if I REALLY agree with this, but it likely is ballpark of how I feel about S&G and their solo work:

Album Artist Year Rating
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme Simon And Garfunkel 1966 100
Graceland Paul Simon 1986 100
Bookends Simon And Garfunkel 1968 95
Bridge Over Troubled Water Simon And Garfunkel 1970 93.1
You're The One Paul Simon 2000 92.7
Stranger To Stranger Paul Simon 2016 90
Negotiations And Love Songs 1971-1986 Paul Simon 1988 88.1
There Goes Rhymin' Simon Paul Simon 1973 87
Breakaway Art Garfunkel 1975 85
Surprise Paul Simon 2006 86.3
Hearts And Bones Paul Simon 1983 85
So Beautiful Or So What Paul Simon 2011 85
Still Crazy After All These Years Paul Simon 1975 84.5
Sounds Of Silence Simon And Garfunkel 1966 80
Paul Simon Paul Simon 1972 77.2
The Concert In Central Park Simon And Garfunkel 1982 77.1
One-Trick Pony Paul Simon 1980 76
The Graduate Simon And Garfunkel 1968 75
The Rhythm Of The Saints Paul Simon 1990 70
Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. Simon And Garfunkel 1964 65

I apologize for the formatting, but I think it's legible... kinda?

seth, based on your ratings, you like the majority of Sounds of Silence.

Wait a minute, you're not a huge fan of his first solo album either?

Anyway, I agree Sounds of Silence has a couple filler songs. That second to last track is pretty dull. However it has plenty to make up for it. Does it get any better than the opening and closing track?
