I suspect this has been done before... but here goes. What preferences in an artists catalog do you have that go well against the usual critics/fans choices?

I seem to be all alone with REM in that I prefer
Fables of the Reconstruction to Automatic for the People

Or Pink Floyd
I'll take Animals any day over The Wall

And Led Zeppelin
I'd rather listen to III than IV or II

Then there's Black Sabbath
Where I take Sabbath Bloody Sabbath over Paranoid

In an even more Classic vein with Foghat
I'd rather listen to Energized than Fool for the City

Finishing with ZZ Top
I'm all in on Trest Hombres, but can skip Eliminator

Black Sabbath definitely, at least 3 albums before Paranoid: the first one, Master Of Reality, Heaven & Hell and there is a strong argument to be made for Vol. 4

Porcupine Tree, I'd take Lightbulb Sun over anything they've recorded, although Fear of a Blank Planet is a close one

Queen, Queen II and maybe even Sheer Heart Attack over A Night At The Opera

Rush, Permanent Waves over Moving Pictures

U2, The Unforgettable Fire and War over Joshua Tree without question

Yeah, Heaven and Hell is my fave overall.

Sounds like I need to make another run at that Porcupine Tree album.

I’m not much of a U2 fan, but War was my preference as well.

Animals is my favorite and The Wall my least favorite of the last four 70s albums.

II is my favorite, but that's not going that far out on the limb.

Sonny Rollins
The Bridge, Way Out West > Saxophone Colossus

I could go on and on forever with this. But this is just some that go against some popular classics on this site anyway. It's not that I think that they're bad albums, I just prefer different ones.

I'll start with two that have already been mentioned.

REM
Murmur over Automatic For the People

Led Zeppelin.
Houses of the Holy over l, ll or lll.

Bowie
Diamond Dogs over Ziggy Stardust

Joni Mitchell
Hissing of Summer Lawns over Blue

Daft Punk
Homework over Discovery

Aphex Twin
Selected Ambent Works Volume 2 over Selected Ambent Works Volume 1

Bob Dylan
Nashville Skyline over Blood on the Tracks

The Doors
Strange Days over The Doors

Fleetwood Mac
Tusk over Rumours

Electric Light Orchestra
Face the Music over New World Record

Pink Floyd I like the whole discography thru The Wall more than DSOTM

Dylan basement tapes more than Blood or HWY 61 or Bringing it all back home

Joni Mitchell Ladies Of the canyon over blue

Santana Live with Buddy Miles or Love Devotion Surrender over Abraxas

Dennis Wilson Bambu over Pacific Ocean Blue

Love Da Capo and Black Beauty over Forever Changes

Neil Young Everybody Knows over After The Gold Rush and Harvest

I may also like Zygote by John Popper more than any of his work with Blues Traveler and Don't Worry About Me by Joey Ramone more than anything he did with the Ramones.
