Rough match-up, isn't Destroyer a big favorite around here? I've never been able to get into him personally, his stuff is always well-produced and layered but it never adds up to anything very memorable. This one actually did grow on me over its 13 minutes, though it took a while to get there. I thought this was going to go somewhere I liked 5 minutes in, and it finally did around the 8 minute mark. It's undeniably an interesting track because of how many different places it goes, so I wouldn't be sad to see it move on even if it's not getting my vote.
Invalid Litter Dept has always been the standout from Relationship of Command for me. It has so many dynamics - the spoken word verses to the shouted choruses, the piano interlude to the vicious guitar outro. The moment when the outro starts is one of those moments where I can't stop myself from jumping around like an idiot when I hear it. Cedric's surreal lyricism is also on display here, though the thing that makes it hit even harder is the story behind the lyrics and the moments where he gets a bit more direct. "And they made sure that the obituaries showed pictures of smokestacks" may be my favorite ATDI lyric - it's like a moment of clarity in the midst of a bunch of cryptic symbolism. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. That's the first time I've heard that Destroyer song and I would love to give it a vote, but Invalid Litter Dept. is easily one of my favourites from then, and still is, and if it wasn't already nominated I most likely would have.
Easily one of the best matches, but At the Drive-In manages to be epic in just 6 minutes. What a song _________________ Finally updated the overall chart
I remember when this album came out they were being hyped up everywhere on the big rock stations, this was supposed to be their major breakthrough or something close, and then they split in half. Anyways love the poetic justice of Cellar facing off some form of the Mars Volta, still going Bay of Pigs because it's a damn near perfect 13 minute suite of internal-euphoric joy, Invalid is a bit more mixed but defintely has it's high points.
Goddamnit. This could be the matchup that breaks me. I adore both songs pretty equally and have listened to both more times than I could possibly count.
I give my vote to Destroyer for the simple fact that the extensive length means the bliss lasts longer _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
