I've mentioned this before and a couple of people said it would make a great thread on its own. I mentioned how Virgin Steele released a perfect album, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Part II, and a total waste of time, Ghost Harvest - Vintage II. Right now that's the only example I can think of. I might include Blink-182 for Enema of the State and Flyswatter, but Flyswatter was a demo from their early career. _________________ Do it yourself and let me play my music: https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=61802

Aerosmith have Rocks and Toys in the attack- two total classics. I'm a softie so I'll include Pump as well Then, at the other end of the spectrum, there is "A rock in a hard place" and "Just push play" . Couldn't even get through a single listen of either album.

The first two Suede albums are both borderline great. Then the third album,"Coming up", is basically unlistenable. Just vacuous songs and the worst kind of dense 90s production.

Ride:
(almost) perfect: Nowhere, Going Blank Again
Terrible : Tarantula
Elastica:
(almost) perfect: Elastica
Terrible : The Menace (Damon Albarn was no longer helping on the songwriting !)

The Pogues. Compare their first 3 albums to the last few after MacGowan was gone, from different worlds. _________________

A true fan will never admit if an artist they like makes a bad album!

I don't think that's true. True fans shouldn't follow blindly. Of course, I'm not "proud to say" that Coda was boring, but I'm not gonna love it for the sake of loving it. _________________ Do it yourself and let me play my music: https://www.besteveralbums.com/thechart.php?c=61802

Yeah of course I was joking . Don't you think that's kind of how human nature is, though? It took me a while to allow myself to form opinions on albums purely on how much I actually enjoyed them as opposed to any preconceived notions/biases. I don't think Coda is boring, it's just not groundbreaking. I'll admit that the middle tracks on Presence are boring, although "Achiiles Last Stand" and "Tea For One" are a couple of my favorite songs ever.
(and of course I still form opinions based on preconceived notions/biases to a large extent)

Yeah, I can't get behind this line of thinking. Ghostface is probably my favourite artist, but he has been depressingly uninspired for years. (Actually, his most recent album had some moments where it felt like the old spark was back, but before that you have to go back to 2010's Apollo Kids to find an album that wasn't either sleep-inducingly boring or otherwise entirely propped up by production that deserved far better.)
EDIT: Just seen you were joking. My point about Ghostface still stands, though judging by RYM ratings it seems I am clearly in the minority. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
