If Carly had moved on this would have been an excruciatingly difficult vote, but as it is it's a super easy vote for Kendrick.

I'm not sure it'd be EXCRUTIATINGLY difficult, I still would've definitely voted for Kendrick, but I would've been upset about having to get rid of a great song. Not so much here. Why wasn't Daydreaming the nominated Radiohead track?

A fairly easy vote to Kendrick in this instance, even though it's not the Kendrick song I'd have picked (or even, frankly, one of the first ten I'd have picked). It's got an intensity that's necessary, and features some of Kendrick's most focused rapping, lyrically and vocally, but it's also preachy and deliberately anthemic, leaning into its fire and brimstone vibe a little too much for me to want to frequently return to it. That said, if I'm in the right frame of mind, and the light catches it just like so, I think it's a work of brilliance, though those moments become more infrequent with each listen. I also like 'True Love Waits' a lot, but it feels kinda lightweight here.

Because you didn't nominate it? I could say the same thing for Kendrick, there are a couple songs on TPAB I would've rather seen nominated.

All that said, I will roll with Kendrick if/when my final nominee loses here. Not a bad way to go out.

Lamar easily - not his best song of the period by far though.

Not my favorite from To Pimp A Butterfly either, but it is a near-perfect song nonetheless. Didn't have to think twice about this vote.

While I do think "Blacker the Berry" does lean a bit too much into that outwardly-anthemic and self congratulatory "hey, I'm willing to confront every side" angle, the song still is a monster and I do think the fire-and-brimstone approach augments it rather than weighs it down, but I agree it isn't my choice off of To Pimp a Butterfly (and hell I would evne rather go with "Duckworth" off of DAMN (remember that record?), a personal favorite of Lamar's). But again like every matchup it's an easy choice here, given with all the great singles and individual tracks from the A Moon Shaped Pool era this feels like the total wet-tissue duff track of the bunch- though admittely still a very pretty tissue on it's own right.
